Anyone fitted a sub in a 4dr??

If so is it better with a box or a free air one??

I fancy doing it but would appreciate some info, i.e makes,models power and amps etc

Free air is always lame. Sealed is my preference but depends on subwoofer, I would be tempted to call lee christie, haven't seen him post for some time but he may be catchable on

I think the sub box you are talking about is the SubWorx box. I tried to get hold of one yesterday, but they no longer make one for the Impreza!

I guess you should look at trying to strap down a decent box instead!

I went to In-Car Systems in Camberley. They said that they could make a similar box box, but it would be in the region of £250, rather than £145 for a SubWorx box.

Also the quality of the SubWorx box left a bit to be desired! The wooden front is nice and solid, but the fibre glass rear, seems quite flimsey!!

I think Adam is the man to talk to about subs & amps!!!

I went for a Genesis 4 channel amp. Two channels for the fronts, which will be Diamond Audio's and bridge the rear for a 12" Diamond Audio sub in a 0.8cubic foot box. Dynamat the whole of the front doors, and some decent Pheonix Gold RCA's. A bit pricey, but the sound of the system was amazing!! Much better than I use to !!!

I'm spending somewhere in the region of £1500 for just an amp, the speakers, box, dynamat and labour!!!

Oh well, the joy's of getting a new car!!!

I'm not an ICE expert... but I'll answer anyway (Hi Adam! ).

I would say a sub makes a difference to a 4dr system, but isn't entirely essential.

I have a set of JL audio VR series components up front, JL 2way at the back and a JL 12W3 in a portable (easily removed if i need space/weight reduction) sealed box in the boot. A couple of Phoenix Gold XS series (IIRC) Amps drive the system.

I find that, if you run decent speaker cable to the doors and parcel shelf you could happily run the system without the sub. If, however, you want that little extra, the sub certainly makes a difference.

Oh, and my puny system is all about sound quality, not quantity...

 

Ive just put in JL components in the front and 2 8" JL Audio Subs in the rear shelf. All driven by a Pheonix Gold Amp. Still have all the boot space for Golf Clubs etc and there enough bass for me. It was them or two 6x9's. I'm sure I made the right choice.

Hmmm some food for thought!

I currently run:

JBL 6x9s in the shelf and Pioneer 5" in the front doors.

I did have a JBL amp to fit, but was knackered and awaiting a new one.
The amp in question is a 2 channel type, what would anyone recommend? Power up fronts or rears (or buy a 4channel and do both??)

Suggestions will be much appreciated!

Moray i to have the same sub as you and an alpine 3558 amp pioneerdex-p88r head unit no front speakers yet left them in the old car, as you i to prefer quality over quantity but am concerned as to weather the sub will carry through well enough on a saloon, im used to hatchbacks.
Ps what are you front jl's like.
