Mini Disc Head Unit
#1
I'm currently running the Kenwood PS970R, and love it.
Sound quality is spot on, and was top in a recent test of Car Stereo mag against Becker and JVC (I think) for sound quality.
The display is excellent and is user configurable. If you want no graphics, there is a "black mask" option to show just minimal stuff...
I've always liked Kenwood stuff, but I do think that the unit is one of the best on the market. The MASK feature now detaches for ultimate security.
Finally, RRP is 500 quid, but I got mine for 350 from Citysounds on the Tottenham Court Road. The guys in there (surprisingly) appear to know their stuff.
Nick.

I am looking to put a mini disc head unit in to my MY99.
Any recommendations as to a good unit for between £300 and £400?
I was thinking about a Kenwood KMD PS971R - does anyone have any thoughts on this model?
Cheers

Always hated kenwoods, just personal I guess.
I would go for the top of the range pioneer minidisc unit, can't remember model number but there are only two models.
Has cool graphics and multi colour hi res display, with lots of features.
If you are near essex/london area, I can do my best to get you a decent discount on any pioneer unit.
Have a look, I think you will like it.

The Alpine MDA-7755R Head Unit is very good. Motorised Front Panel, Radio Text etc. It just so happens that i am selling one along with a 12 Disc CD-Changer. See my ad in the Private section if you are interested.

I found the Sony (7900) to be very good quality and very easy to use (more than my current Pioneer).
However, if volume is your thing, I found the pre-outs on the Sony to be very weak (supposedly 4v like the Pioneer).
Gains on my external amp. were at about 60% with the Sony. Fitting the Pioneer, and had to turn the gains down to about 25% becuase it was just DAMN LOUD.
Sony headunit died after 10 months due to a failure of the minidisc drive mechanism.
Don't get me wrong, the Sony is good stuff (and currently cheaper then the Pioneer by a long way).
Cheers
