Hi, more ICE questions.....

Has anyone got a knife out and cut the the factory grilles off to get space for 6.5" components in the front doors? If so, what's it look like now and what materials did you use for any build and new grille.

Also, has anyone mounted a tweeter in front of the mid-bass in the door?

Cheers,

Vindaloo.

See my thread for fitting components - although I put the tweeters on the triangles. I didn't have to alter the original grills to fit the 17cm speakers - I believe they are approx 6.5"

Mounting the tweeter there can give great imaging and very coherent sound, but is dependent upon the dispersion characteristics of your tweeter.

Best advice would be to put the tweeters on long flying leads with a lump on blutak on the back of 'em (available from all good ice establishments ) and work out where sounds good.

I think the problem is going to be getting the tweeters angled properly without i) having to destroy the door trim too much and ii) keeping the tweeters out of the way of feet, shoes etc when getting out of the car.

Maybe I'll speak my my local ICE installer 'cos I haven't quite finished the previous 'project' yet.....

It's worth playing with the positioning as you want to get the best sound to your ears, not your ice installers - which might just coincide with being where is easiest for them to fit the things

Hi
Just bought a 98 Imprezza Sport 5dr and am upgrading the speakers, so a friend pointed me towards this forum.
Has anyone tried fitting tweeters behind the empty standard tweeter grill next to the door handle? If it sounds ok, then many thanks to Subaru for being so thoughtful and supplying the grill.
Thanks to dnb for the template for the doormount btw.

They don't sound bad in the standard location, but IMHO the better location for tweeters with very little effort is on the back of the black plastic triangle bits behind the wing mirrors.

Thanks!
I think I'll go for behind the grills option for security reasons.
