Question

Hi folks,

Having sorted the front speakers I have finally got round to changing the headunit on my 01. Being lazy I thought that one of these 'mask' units would save me popping the front panel off every time I got out of the car.

Consequently, bearing in mind the budget of up to £220, I looked at the Sony CDX M630/M730 and the Kenwood KDC 7024. I'm not bothered about playing MP3 as long as it will cope with CD-R/RW.

Has anyone got any of these units and, if so, do you rate them?

I have found the 630/730 at £145/£214 at www.incardiscount.co.uk and the 7024 for £200 at mcs-direct.co.uk. Is there anywhere cheaper?

Also, would it be worth changing the rear speakers? If so what will drop in without breaking the bank?

Cheers,
Nige

Question

OK, if no one appears to have an opinion on either of these units does anyone have any suggestions for a £220'ish replacement headunit for a MY01?

I've got a Kenwood mask unit which I think was the earlier model, it works fine and can be heard over the decat etc. You have the option to remove the front as it's closing if you will be away for a while.
I was the same as you, but now, wish I'd gone the MP3 route. Don't know about rear speakers though.

Alpine make the best headunits without a doubt. Go for something like the 7874 for £180.

Sorry, have to doubt you. I do not like entry level alpines at all. Their high end stuff is excellent, but I personally don't find that they're much different from either Pioneer or Kenwood high end ranges. With any range, you get what you pay for, and my past experience with Alpine entry level stuff (admittedly a few years ago) has put me off their "cheap" stuff.

Thumbs up

Thanks guys,

I'll check out Empire as well as MCS and Incardiscount. Probably best to try a local supplier to see if I can hear a selection.

Cool

I have just fitted the Alpine CDA-7893R and it's very nice

I love the way I can rip a huge pile on MP3's onto a CD/RW and take it with me, about 6 CD's onto 1 disk

The MP3 playback is excellent and quick

This head unit can be purchased for about £250 or just under.

Coulty,

I have just got a 7894RB and think it is great.

Still trying to learn all of it's functions.
