Can't tell you what the "best" is, but if I were in the market I'd look at the Denison range from ihavetohave.it. I also am in awe of the empeg, but that's probably because I'm a geek at heart and anything with the tagline "Does your car stereo run Linux?" appeals to me.

Empeg is the best, but they're a bit hard to come by. They occasionally come up on ebay.com, but almost never in the UK. Quite strange when they were designed and built in the UK in the first place !

Went to order the empeg the day they stopped making them. Don't know what happened to the design after they sold out. Real shame though as i think it looked the nicest player on the market.

The design was sold to SonicBlue, who make Rio stuff, in Nov 2000. There was then a production run made under the Rio name, and then no more. It was finally discontinued in Jab 2002 and all remaining stock was cleared.
Rio (who obviously still hold all the design rights) has now been sold to D&M, parent company of Denon & Marantz. Maybe there will be an Empeg mk3 yet.....
