Chiark, do CD Technologies have a website?

I've just changed my car, so now I'm thinking about front speakers. I'm asking myself; "Do I stick with my Alpine DDDrive stuff which we really like or do we go for something else?"

The car is a new Focus.
Sources are Sony
Amps are Alpine
Subs are Infinity
None of the above will change.

This is what I've got my eyes on;

These are probably designed by ex-Philips designers and built in an ex-Philips factory using ex-Philips methods and expertise on ex-Philips production lines. Probably.
We like Philips stuff and there's a lot of Philips history on 'my other-half's' side of the family.

With big chunky mid-bass speakers, big tweeters, very big tweeters and a crossover point of 3800Hz, I reckon these should sound the goolies.

What do you guys reckon?

CD Technologies did have a website, but it seems to have disappeared - dunno if they've gone under.

If you already like the Alpine DDD stuff, I'd be tempted to say stick with what you know as, if you know you like it, you can't go wrong.

If I was in the market for new speakers, I'd audition Focal stuff. Just got ANOTHER top write-up in Total Car Audio again, which means they must be doing something right. This is a budget set, too...

Cheers,

Nick.

I've got that issue but I haven't read that review yet but since it's right infront of me, I will.

Trouble is, I'm so fussy about the tweeters. We don't like a bright sound but so many tweeters sound too bright.

You would like the CD stuff then. I've tried the silk dome and the titanium set, and even the titanium set is smooooth and easy. Which is exceedingly unusual for ti sets in my experience...

I agree. I've not heard a titanium tweeter that I've liked.
Although the DDDrive tweets are soft dome type, even they are a bit bright with the supplied passive crossover network. I was using a slightly older pair of Alpine passive crossovers which improved the sound quite a bit. They were sounding very good in the Scort.

I've read the rather complimentary review of the Focal Access speakers in Toatal Car Audio. May be worth auditioning them if theres a dealer nearby.

My thoughts exactly - plus, for the money (120 quid IIRC) it seems like they could be a bargain. Assuming they'll fit

Aha, they've renamed - see CDT Audio's website.

God, I'm stupid.

The tweeters that I have are actually silk dome not titanium! That could explain why they don't sound harsh.

Coat on, engine running. D'oh.

Hehehe

Where did you buy your CDT speakers?

I've had a look at the site and if I were to go for any of their speakers, it would probably be the CL-61 with free CL-6X

Cheers Chiark

I bought the first set (CL-51) from Maximum Impact in Leeds, and the HD-62DT ("Deluxe Tweeter") came direct from CDTAudio. They're actually b-grade woofers, perfect x-overs and perfect tweeters. They're b-grade due to a scratch on the basket, but I was assured that they're sonically perfect. The scratch is absolutely tiny

I think it was around $50 for standard shipping, which actually turned up next day.
