Are Infinity and JBL speakers the same??
#1
I've been looking at getting some Infinity 605cs component speakers for the scoob but lately i've also looked at the JBL 605ce set. They appear to be the same with a different badge.... is this so? All the specs are identical and even the instruction manual uses the same pics etc and they are both part of the Harmann group. However the JBL set seems to be £15.00 cheaper. If they are indeed just rebabges of the same product i'll be taking the JBLs then .

They never used to be the same... They're both imported to the UK by the same people IIRC, but that's about it. Of course this may have changed, in which case Holmes you could be onto something
I wonder if the tweeters on JBL are less bright?

I too didn't think they were the same. The specs are all identical and tho and if you download the owners manuals (think they're respective American website has these) the pics are identical. The JBL even comes with the adaptor ring that makes the infinity so easy to fit into the scooby. Have a look at the speaker basket and they are identical too.
Think im gonna go for the JBL, and pocket the £15.00. The JBLs are just over £72.00 from MCS Direct. Bargain .
Have a look at the pics below and the links... see what you think.

It's quite probable that the two companies speakers are made in the same factory.
Some Alpine speakers use exactly the same plastic baskets as certain Sony speakers. I wouldn't be surprised if they too are made in the same factory.
A lot of audio companies don't make their own speakers. There aren't that many true speaker manufacturers.

I've been to the factory, and yes they are made in the same building. Designs are quite different, but Harman are very careful to keep their brands quite individual (most of the time ).
See Nick, I have been somewhere useful Not even mentioned earthing - oh bu55er

So the mounting hardware is the same.... basket/tweeters both use 'i-mount' system etc. But the cones etc. differ slightly and so the speakers could well sound very different. I suspect that they will be very similar considering that the specs are idendical (sensitivity, freq. range......... etc.)
Think i'll give the JBLs a go and see how they sound. They'll be amped to a Kenwood 849 (4 x RMS i think) so should sound OK.
Cheers,
Tony.

I'd try the JBLs, too... Let us know what you think, particularly of the treble which I find a little too bright on the Infinities. You can tone it down of course, but would be itnerested to see what the JBL's are like now.

I have one or two ;-) sets of these in the demo car...
They're pretty good. I'd describe the tweeters as sweet rather than bright. The x-over is pretty horrible though.
Cheers

chiark,
Its not just me then, I find the tweeters on the Infinity's a bit "ssssey" also, I was thinking of trying the original tweeter to see if it made any difference.

It ain't just you
I quite like the infinity stuff, providing the tweeters are attenuated, and for the money it's good kit, plus it drops in. Haven't heard JBL in a looong time tho, so that would be interesting
I'm still running CD Technologies stuff and loving it

Gareth - I would think you'd getter better results by toning down the infinity tweeters slightly than going back to the original ones. There's two basic ways to do this - mechanically (eg put some thin foam in front of them) or electonically eg with a suitable resistor and/or capacitor.
That's why I like my Kenwood dual mags - 3 level tweeter attenuation in the cross over, so you can always find the right setting.
