Question

A friend of mine has an E46 Beemer with a factory-fitted Satnav and video system. He's looking to disable the motion lock so passengers can watch TV while he's driving. Anyone know how to do this or who can do it for him?

Any advice much appreciated.

It'll be linked to the handbrake is my guess. There'll be something that goes from the unit to the handbrake that gets earthed when the handbrake is on, et voila a picture appears...

Note that it is illegal to have a moving picture in the driver's field of vision, apparently

Nick.

I've seen the cigarette lighter used as a switch to turn the video on/off on a Scoob.

not possable srceen is linked to speed pulse and if removed will cause error codes to come on.

I thought it was based on the hand brake, but maybe not - easy to test - just take the hand brake off with the foot brake on and see what happens. Even if it is the speed pulse, then it should be possible in theory to fix it so the TV works all the time. I would have thought it is a circuit with a sensor/switch that activates accordingly - if this is bypassed, or fixed without being removed, then it should work - all that needs doing is fixing it so that it believes the car is stationary. Easier said than done, but i would have thought possible in some way or another. Just don't get caught by the cozzers watching the Fast and Furious!!

the pulse for the new 3 series is digital and not square wave and can not be copyed without causing problems with ecu as they all talk to each other. Have tryed to get round this for a customer and caused lots of faults to come up on the ecu which had to be cleared by the dealer and then logged on the BMW data base

Its not me - personally I think its daft!

Thanks for your replies though. He's found a place that will do it. For a scarey price of £300 or so. Not sure if he's going to bother. They have to take out the satnav control unit and reprogramme it - so you were right, its not simply linked to the handbrake.
