weird size is the correct answer.
you can squeeze in a 6.5" speaker, but its the depth that is the deciding point since theres not much room.
any tweeter will fit behind the grille..you'll have to make up a little mount for it anyway..

I installed Kenwood 13cm components in the front door, and glued the tweeter to the door frame behind the hole. The 13cm cone fits in the existing plastic mounting, and replaces the existing speaker perfectly.(I like things which make life easy). 16.5 inch fit OK if you make a collar out of MDF.

That's gotta be one hell of an MDF collar to squeeze a speaker 10.5" bigger than OE into the same hole!!! :-)
Alternatively, the JLB 602s go straight in, but unless you're running some subs they'll be too bass-shy for normal use (IMHO).
