Question

Hi guys,

I need a little advice, went and splashed out on some ICE, and was told by the little chap in the shop, that these focals will fit into my P1 ... i've taken the door apart and, and i'm a little worried that these buggers are a little large and will stop my windows from opening fully. Has anyone actually fitted these? is so, any tips/tricks?

Look forward to hearing something soon. Cheers

No idea if they will fit or not but they are supposed to be V sweet speakers. Let me know if you get them how they fit in there.

mount them on a mdf spacer... But make your spacer whilst the window is down... remember to allow for the cone excursion towards the door panel / grille..

thx, hopefully, Sextons might have a mount (originally designed for a Corsa) that *might* allow to me fit these speakers. Going on Sat so they can take a look ... all i gotta do now, is thread the power lead (which, despite what everyone says ie use the air con grommet, i cant seem to find it ) and fabricate a bulkhead to mount my shiney Lanzar amps on. Now where did i put my jigsaw

Err, assuming your P1 is the same door build as my my98, then I'm afraid you'll have to either:

make do with a window that comes down half way, or
rebuild the doors.

I orginally purchased the polyglass 165 and they wouldn't fit. The basket and magnet are too big and you really need a good 6mm room for excursion for the speaker between the interior door panel. I planed down a collar to about 6mm and it still wasn't enough. I opted for the smaller (but still bassy) 135 - just have a look at the depth of the cone - although it has the same magnet, the diameter is smaller and hence does not touch the door panel. You can put the 165 in, but they will touch the panel and could damage the speaker when pushed a bit. As focals sound best when driven, they are going to move quite a bit. Ask London Car Audio for advice as they had a 555 with focals as their demo car a couple of years back (near the bbc centre on the main road below pitcher and piano).

You can use Autoleads Corsa mounting speaker spacers, but they are platic and for a little effort using some mdf you would be much better off sound wise with the latter, its easy enough to do, don't compromise sound quality for a little hard work

Make sure you've got a powerful amp running these as well. One of the chaps in LCA worked for max power as their ice bloke for a while, and he's given me some good advice contrary to the crap those mags often spiel! They had a phase linear running the sub and fronts (one of the good ones before they were bought out).

I have the 165's in an sti5 (same as P1)? - they fit no probs with an mdf spacer

Sound is good

But I'll be selling mine (fronts and rears) as I want to put some older and more expensive Dyn Audio speakers in - I prefer home stereo sounding speakers. Plus I can run the Dyns at 200wrms - the Focals cant take anywhere near this amount

Hope they fit, as I just bought a pair today !! I'll let you know when I get a chance to try 'em. They are pretty deep, and I did wonder myself, I have to admit !!

If anyone gets these 6.5" Focals to fit please let me know! I have some Focal 165's and they sound amazing.. but I just cant get them to fit in the Impreza, tried MDF Spacers but they either hit the windows or hit the door cards..

such a shame as they are Very good speakers and I really cant bring myself to buy some of those Infinity 605 things!

Well, with some jiggery pokery, me and my mate got them to fit. Got a pair of autoleads Corsa mounts, which we modded and then used mdf pieces to get the proper mounting position. The speaker basket clears the window, and "hopefully" the cone wont impact the door card. Gonna test it over the weekend to make sure. If anything goes wrong, London Car Radio Centre (Nottingham) specialises in fitting these speaker by all accounts. Will keep y'all posted.

Top effort in getting these buggers in! I just hope they don't rub against the door cards. Good to see your talking to the LCR lot - you should have all the advice there you'll need. Did you check out any of the installs in their workshop?

Yeah m8, gonna be gentle with them so i can make sure they dont get wrecked. Saying that, the speakers/sub/amps all need a run in period anyway by all accounts.

Wink

apparently the focal 135 won a front comp shootout recently in a car audio test. What they should have done is do a four page review of the focal range and chucked the others out...
