Expecting my STI in September but would like to upgrade the hifi.

Are the double DIN units easily available (rather than the rip-off Subaru dealership prices).

Does the wiring loom need much hacking?

Thanks in advance

Andy,

you can either fit a double din unit or a single din unit and a pocket. Audio G Man has provided instructions for the FAQ.

Cheers, Nick.

Andy,

There are some double din units for sale in the uk if you wanted them, personally you are better off going and getting a decent quality single din and getting a blank for the other din hole, Alpine have some choice double din units in the states, over here, Pioneer, Sony and Clarion sell them off the top of my head.

www.caraudiodirect.com have some double dins for sale.

I totally agree, unless you really want tape, get a single din and a blanking plate from Subaru. I requested my plate when I picked mine up and it was £13.

I brought a Alpine 7973 from http://www.MCS-Direct.co.uk and a set of Infinity speakers for the front.

Very impressed, i've just been sitting in my car in my garage blasting my brains out.

I fitted a blaupunkt skyline range head unit (I fitted Los Angeles MP72 MP3, but any of the "72" range - tape/CD etc fit fine). You can then double up with their 5 disc in dash changer to fill up the second DIN slot. Looks great. Uprated speakers and a liberal sprinkling of dynamat (vital upgrade - the doors are too tinny for really good sound) means it sounds fantastic too. AFAIK only two people do an in dash changer to fill the second slot. Blaupunkt at <£200, or Nakamichi at about £1500.

Look at www.bluespot.co.uk

Got to get me a digital cam to post the pictures of this (and my back speaker mountings)

to answer the otherquestion as I just noticed no-one else has . . .

the wiring loom needs no hacking. you can buy for about £10 - maybe less - an adapter that plugs straight into the Scooby plug and straight into the back of your new stereo, Halfords can order it, or most proper ICE shops will have it in stock. You may also need a £1.99 aerial adpater, or it may come with your new head unit. Total fitting time - around the 10 second mark.

I would have said go for a single din but after getting the VR4 (import) the double din that came with it is excellent, it has a single cd and tape player in one and sounds great with the standard speakers and has load of featurs for enhancing the sound, too many flashing lights tho, anyway its an Addzest (Clarion) unit but if was going to change then i would have the Blaupunkt Woodstock MP3 DAB.

Thumbs up

JVC have just released a new double din MP3-CD-Cass-Tuner... with 150 odd songs on a single disc you'll save a few bob on a changer and spend it on some decent front splits !
