Hopefully pick up my 2006 WRX this coming week and i'm looking to change the stereo just looking for some ideas on which one

I'll say what I always say.

Pick the headunit by looking at features you want, relaibility, and backup, (ie: don't buy cheap Chinese).

Pick speakers after hearing them. Any that are recommended, you could hate, or love: sound is very subjective.


I would always say go to somewhere you can listen. I chose mine after a blind test in Halfords, liked the sound of the Sony ones.

I bought a top of the line pioneer touch screen double din unit which changed the sound quality of the car without changing any of the speakers. It's leaps and bounds above the what the original subaru unit was capable of, it sounds amazing! Don't see the need to do the speakers as invested the money in to really good headunit that has no need for additional speaker upgrades.

Have you seen any Scoob speakers? Cheap cr@p 13cm units??

Get some better ones in and hear your headunit sing.

honestly don't see the need the sound quality is fantastic and absolutely no distortion with lovely base

Go and listen to some decent speakers, then tell me how good it is?

Think about it: what you are saying is that if you have a HiFi CD player costing £500 and an amplifier costing £500, it's OK to add speakers costing £10?

MIGHT sound OK to you, but put the £500 speakers on, and then what??

Your car, though, your choice.

To be honest I don't know if the previous owner could have changed them the car I have never taken the door cards off, the rest of the car looked stock when I got it but the sound quality really is great the current pioneer unit has a built in amplifier with very good quality mosfets. It was mediocre with the original unit in but was still ok. I do a lot of work with sound systems and never settle for a low quality equipment with what ever device I'm using or working with.

The standard HU is shockingly poor, so it's not surprise that everything sounds great with a new one.

Integrated HU amps are 50w RMS, so most of the time you are only using 25w or less. Within the tolerance of the stock speakers. The sound will definitely improve with better speakers but to a lesser extent until you start feeding them decent power and exploiting their dynamic range.

Depends on your budget but I just went for a Pioneer FH-X700BT which was only quid in Halfords. It's got Bluetooth hands free and streaming, decent amp and is miles better then the standard ( knackered) head unit. Kicker front speakers for about 50 quid including the adapters are much better but only a sub will add the missing base. I'm still deciding which way to go as my boot is filled with lpg tank so maybe an underseat sub.
