Default Engine Oil - 99 UK 2000 Turbo

Hi guys,

This has probably been asked millions of times before but I cannot find a definitive answer for my car?

I have just serviced the Scooby with what was recommended by Unipart, I filled her up with 5W/30 fully synthetic is this ok for my car?

Its a MY99 UK Turbo 2000 AWD Wagon with 113,000 on the clock, Only mods are newage STi top mount and a cat back exhaust system.

Thanks in advance Luke

I think the guy at Unipart has given you the oil reccomended for a post 2000 subaru (bug eye). They used to supply us for the odd oil when we run out (usually have bulk from Castrol) and I always had to double check what they delivered as I couldn't 100% trust them.

In reality there is no real difference between the engines fitted in a late classic and a bug eye, but Subaru reccomended the thinner oil for the later model years.

But from Subaru's standpoint it really it should be using 5w-40 or 10w-40.

Next question you are going to ask is will it do any harm. The answer is unknown - it depends on the manner and circumstances the car is driven what oil is usually used beforehand, and how its been maintained and driven in the past.

Thanks ALi-B!

At the moment its getting driven like a granny as a clutch change is on the cards (Excedy clutch on route to me as we speak) so I guess there is no real issue at present.

I just want to make sure I'm filling her up with the very best Oil.

Would you recommend changing it once I get my clutch fitted? (as she will be getting driven a tad harder) although I'm not one for "Ragging" my cars I do like to feel the power from time to time!

Thanks,

Thanks,

Almost all 5w-40 oils are fully synthetic (with the exception of some oils for VW pumpe-duse injection diesels).

Whereas most 10w40 oils are part synthetic, with the excpetion of a few specialist oils (300v and Miller CFS for example).

5w-40 has better viscosity when cold than 10w-40. Both have almost the same viscosity when hot (at 100degreesC).
