Smile Squad pulled me cos I got Black customised WRX

I got pulled today by an ******* copper who thought he was king dick!
He said he pulled me for doing 65 on 60 road then he proceeds to tell me my whole car is illegal ie Exhaust to loud, Wrong wheels 18s RSS 5 Spoke, STi seats ???, then tells me my engine is to modded and if he was a traffic cop he would of taken my car off me!
Anyway, i just smiled politely as it's all legal, I don't really know what his problem was. He did'nt give me a ticket, did'nt tell me to get anything changed and he and his mate went on their way laughing???
Think they were just being ****!
One last thing, one them said I must have a cat on it?
As it is it's a straight through 3" stainless with big box on the back.
Do I have to have a cat on a 1994 impreza wrx??
It past it's last mot without one on.
If anyone can shed any light on the legal requirement for the exhaust I'd be grateful.

As far as I know vosa govern what's legal on the road and the standards set in an mot so if it passes as road legal then I can't see what a bored traffic cop could ever do about it, could always ask them if they honestly think its loud or illegal when compared to any and all Harley Davidson motorcycles which never get pulled over lol

If it ain't standard they can do you for it if they want, I'm sure they changed something last year , VOSA can make you have an inspection too and you won't win with either of them in a court if it's not got a standard box on it, You've got to be really unlucky to get done for it, I know people who have had complaints off neighbours which resulted in a VOSA inspection and they just changed the box before going

Squad? I thought Dappy was in the CBB House?

Anyway, on a '94 can't see decat being an issue emissions wise but noise limits will be a factor.

So any exhaust component that is not OE is an MOT failure?

i sugest you read my thread on here just got a nip, if it's jdm under 101db and you didn't fit the exhaust (ie previous keeper did) they cannot touch you. section 44rta 1988 sub paragraph f clearly states any motor vehcile not made for uk/eu use must pass a sva, and to do so it must be under 101db therefore section 42rta 1988 doe's not apply to and jdm cars

Passing an mot does not mean a car is legal. for instance you could stick blue flashing lights on your csr. It wouldnt fail the mot providing the car had all the other correct lights. Yet you could be nicked for pretending to be a copper

And you could also modify after an mot , so that excuse probably isn't trusted by the police as they no doubt hear it all the time.

Smile

Thanks guys, lol. I am aware of the noise level and it's not that bad I've herd louder! The only thing I have different is when it was STI re-mapped I had an over fuel put on it so it pops like a rally car when you loose the throttle off and it's all been set up to be a de-cat. I've had it 6 months and most cops don't bat an eye lid where I live cos I live by Epynt and we get rally cars round here all the time.
I know the emissions are more strict on newer models but I did'nt think cat's were compulsory on 1994 models as long as it passes the standard emission check.
As for the exhaust I just put a new one of the one that was already on there. So, I'm going to leave it as it is. Besides I love it, nothing sounds quite like a scooby with over fuel.

Not sure if it is on MOT`s or VOSA checks?

I forget how they word it but its very ambiguous so can be interpreted how they see fit, Hence if they tell you to change it ...change it would be my advice....Doesnt stop me from running a full 3" decat with a miltek box and at 93DB @ 4.5K i have no problems...Even passes an MOT

The MoT rules state that if a cat was fitted at the factory, the car MUST have one fitted for the MoT.

"A catalytic converter missing where one was fitted as standard". Is a fail whether it passes the emissions test or not.

I did some digging on the exhaust question. There is a noise limit for new production cars. A ****ty be of EC law states that if the exhaust is modified to produce more noise than the car was approved for when new, it is illegal.

This means if you are running a 1930 Bentley on straight through headers, they can't prosecute you as there is no db limit for motor cars (there is for bikes) and there was no noise legislation in 1930 .

However if you are in a car built in the last 20-30 years and you put a loud exhaust on, you are breaking the law. On the whole the police won't bother nicking you unless you are being a **** or the exhaust is stupidly loud.

any car made for use in uk/eu after 1993 i think must be less than 89db any car not made for use in uk/eu must be subjected to a sva test and in order to pass sva test, it must be less than 101db, so if your car is a jdm no problem, if however it's a uk model it should be less than 89db, look up section 44 of the 1988rta sub parragraph f it's clear as to the rules, it got me off

Are all of the mods on the car declared on insurance? If not then yes all the mods are illegal as you have no insurance

Wink

Yes, So mine should be fine as it was imported from Japan in 1995.
As for insurance it is insured with Arnold Clarke as a custom motor so every things sound.
Unless I have to change anything I'm not going to just cos of one cop who was obviously bored. Plus if he actually had a problem with my car why did'nt he do anything about it?
