Default Difference Between Newage coil packs ?

Hi Guys,

Just received my newage coil packs 2nd hand from the breakers, they are Model FK0186

Now, ive also seen newage coilpacks at FK0140

The difference between the 2 (from the net) is FK0140 has a dwell angle of 3ms, the FK0186 Has a dwell angle of 5ms

so, are the FK0186 ones i have better and will they be o.k for my classic converstion ?

Cheers

I'm in the process of upgrading my 1999 Classic to coil on plugs. Because we're trying to cure a high rev, WOT, on track misfire. Car is on about 340bhp @ 21psi atm.

Finding out the differences between coils has been a challenge so I'm reviving this old thread to write a summary;

There are 2 main factors to consider:
  • Dwell time - The time taken to re-energise the coil. The car ignition map will factor this in so it doesnt try to spark before the coil is ready.
  • Boot Length - How long the rubber boot is that goes over the plug.

Coil numbers explained:
FK0140 - 3ms Dwell. 9cm boot
FK0186 - 5ms Dwell. 9cm boot
FK0334 - 3ms Dwell. 8cm boot.

I've bought FK0186 surefire performance coils and a JTI conversion loom for my car.

The chap at Surefire has said that despite the FK0186 coils being designed for cars set up with 5ms dwell they only take 2.3ms to recharge (depending on battery voltage available) so they'll be holding their charge for upto 2.7ms.
This could cause heat build up and eventually damage the coils. We'll have to see!
NB the other "3ms" coils actually only take 2ms to charge.

Over and out!
