Was going to suggest taking the old ones to a bearing supplier.

Thats what i intend on doing when my box goes **** up. (Mine is 5-speed tho)

I asked api what they change in a recon box but got no answer, and they wanted something like £350 for a few of the bearings iirc. (Not dissing them by any means here, just giving a price)

But im a diy man and like to know how things work if i dont, so ill take mine apart and give it a go.

A recon box from APi will be an exchange unit most times, that has had a rebuild and will have been repaired as necessary to make it a good guarantee-able unit. We rarely sell used boxes unless we have had them to bits OR know their history by driving the car.

Specific things get changed every time like drop gear bearings and certain synchro cones that we know to be troublesome. Over the years we have amassed many, many parts from stripped imported boxes and UK exchange units, so we have a huge fund of perfectly good useable spares. The one thing that does bite us hard is when a unit 5 speed or 6 speed - comes in with a knackered centre viscous. They are about £400 from Subaru and we regularly have to fit them. They cannot be rebuilt or repaired in any way it is a sealed unit with no spares available. Anyone offering a rebuilt or recon unit is selling you a used one cleaned up ......

The selling price of a 5 speed TY754 recon is usually £750.00 + VAT And has a guarantee for 6 months 6000 miles against synchro or bearing failure. We NEVER cover gear tooth failure. Some breakers sell used ones at about that price with a 30 day guarantee.

6 Speeders are bespoke rebuilt as a customers own unit, we do not have a recon programme for them yetawhile, as it is possible to buy [ occasionally ] a 6 speeder in used form cheaper than a proper recon unit and in any case most are for conversions where there is no exchange unit.

Most used 6 speeders need about 600-700 quid spending on them just through wear and tear. And many viscous ones have a knackered centre diff, so what seems a cheap 6 speeder, often isn't by the time it is in the car and driving properly.

Good Luck all, David

Thanks for clearing that up David.
just out of interest, how do you tell/test if a centre diff is shot??

i guess your price for a recon box is not that bad considering the parts that need to be replaced.

mine currently sounds like its straight cut in first and second, and slightly audible in the rest of the gears, but until it breaks properly ill keep driving it.

its either chipped teeth or worn bearings I think

We have a torque meter that we use, together with several years of experience as to how they ought to feel when OK But most have burst open and the circlip that holds it all together is off. But any car that has a lumpy sensation to the transmission when parking or slow turning is suspect. The fluid in the viscous seeps out and turns the gear oil JET Black.

It'll be a bearing, possibly one of the drop gear bearings, so maybe not too bad and possible to do on a 754 by taking the back of the box off in the car. If it fails it might well take the drop gears with it. Stitch in time...........

Chipped teeth go clicketty click. They don't whine.

Ah ok, thanks david.

i did question you before on it, but i thought the drop gears whined at speed?

this sounds like its in reverse in first and second, so i was thinking maybe bearings at the front of the box, like mainshaft etc. the whine is still there a bit in 3rd/4th and 5th but much less so.

can you please give me a price for the drop gear bearings, via pm etc. thanks, Dan

as said, i dont lean anything getting others to do stuff, and i like to tinker lol

The drop gear bearings are not all the same it depends upon the version of box TY754 VN 1/ 2/ 3/ 4/ 5/ 6/ 7 AA the later ones have taper rollers and earlier up to 3 I think without talking to my transmission guy Rob are ball races. But if the box has been 'done ' at any time they could have been altered.

There are 3 necessary ones and the usual cost is circa £120.00 + VAT for all three. That is a ball park you understand, it may be up or down a bit depending upon the bearing type.

No harm in tinkering, we earn heaps getting people out of holes they have dug .....

You guys know me by now. You get it straight from the hip every time.

I have ten mouths to feed here, we are happy to help you try and do it yourself but please remember us when you are in doo-doo.

We are sorting out a late car for a guy who took it elsewhere after we quoted and has had 7 months or so of grief. We had a look around it for him and pointed out a large number of bolts that hadn't been refitted by this team of ' expert specialists, who really know their stuff ' The car has a number of issues which we hope to correct but the poor customer is best part of 7 grand down after 7 months and left with a bag of poo, when we quoted a bit over half that.

We might run late on some jobs, as we did and took a pasting for earlier this year. BUT they were right when they went out the door, no matter how much pressure we were put under to get them done.

David

PS Advert over.....

Thats not bad! How much was it for you guys to fit lol?

Nah, as said i like learning so i will have a go, and just as you said, if it goes **** up then ill take it to those that can!

Im no mechanic by any means, but ill have a look!
I know my was around an engine etc and built my last decent car from the ground up, but i didnt do the paint, nor welding etc. only because i dont have the kit!

Ps i have an api recon engine in my. Car, only had the car 6 months or so, but so far its still going strong (touches large piece of wood!) thats on 30k odd miles, so i have no doubt in api's workmanship!

Is it backlash?
Ie you come to a downhill and lift off, and it sounds like its in reverse lol?

If so, then without the gauges etc,its a bit of a pain to adjust as you will need shims etc.

I think i read somewhere tho that imprezas are notorious for it. S most just put up with the noise

Not something I have ever seen or heard, excess backlash. So in my experience not that common. In fact as cars go Subaru boxes are more tolerant of loose settings than I have been used to in my previous careers with transmissions.

I desperately need my 6sp doing now, i think its a full set of synchros, and possibly selectors as I now have a very notchy feel to the box. I think i killed it on a spirited drive yesterday evening as I didnt have brake temperature and was hammering the gearbox into the corners....

The diffs whine alot anyway on over run etc, Mine has always done it, I assume its just more noticeable due to lack of sound deadening and interior etc!
