at a guess id say the hg has failed and been repaired recently with no bottom end bearings being changed.

when the hg fails the water mixes with the oil and washes out the bottom end bearings, if not replaced with the hg they fail soon after.

they usually only knock when revved, id stop driving it asap or more damage and expense will be incurred

Mate I really feel for you...

These bloody 2.5's are like driving around with the sword of Damocles hanging over your head.

I laugh it of when people comment about it on the forum, but really wish I had not got one....

Good luck and I hope its not as bad as you fear.....

Paul

yeh id say thats the fault, another rebuild needed im afraid.
I wouldn't drive it though as you will damage it more with a knocking bottom end.
are you 100% sure its bottom end knock as the sound is pretty distinctive.
you tube it and see if its the same noise.
but having no oil pressure will kill the engine anyway so the pump may have failed like suggested above and caused the problem.
april 2012 is a fair way back though they usually fail soon after unless the car hasn't been used much

this is gonna sound stupid it sounds more like a clack clack clack but quite fast it sounds like its coming more from the heads than the bottom end if that makes sense i wont be driving it luckily i wasnt far from home when it failed its now tooked away in the garage also when it started the oil light was just flickering on and off more so when i went round a corner which lead me to believe that my oil might of been low which is why i started heading home then the oil light came on constant and the knocking noise was coming and going it wasnt doing it constantly from looking through the receipts its done about 5k since the gasket was changed

ahh 5k maybe the oil pump has failed then or possibly or the pick up inside the sump has broken as this is another common fault.
either way no oil pressure equals dead engine, deff sounds like bottom end knock

when my bottom end went i was gutted.............proper gutted but onwards and upwards as they say

i bought a second hand 2.0 sti8 lump from matty@ pole-position for a good price then threw a new timing kit,oil pump, water pump, thermostat, rocker gaskets, plugs on it,total bill was around £2k and i now have my old scdb in bits awaiting a rebuild but i cant decide which way to go....2.1 stroker, forged 2.5 or forged 2.0

i wont be starting it until after xmas anyway

speak with andy @ williams motorsport on here as his prices seem fair

Default re car

Was it a private sale or dealer? I would expect a bit more than 2 days use before it went !

Oil pick up may have snapped
You could drain the oil , inspect & then remove the sump

was a private sale i drove over 100 miles to get it so i would of thought had there been a issue it would of happeend in that time i paid just shy of 8 grand which is why im broke im praying its either the pick up or oil pump as like i said its not constantly knocking seems to do it now and then under load got a subaru specialist coming to inspect it in the next half hour to tell me what my options are

Gutted for you... A possible option is to buy yourself a crappy runaround while you look into the cost of a rebuild. If you're handy with spanners the rebuild is in the realms of "advanced home mechanic" and with spare wheels you can afford to take your time and do most of it much cheaper than taking it to a specialist. Just an idea.
Another option is to get a GUARANTEED rebuilt unit on an exchange, then you are only paying for the spannering of getting the old one out and the new one in.
More options for you to think about, at least. Best of luck.

Thats propper pants mate!!

Really sorry to hear that, these dreaded 2.5s are a nightmare mine was on its 2nd engine when I bought it and its only done 45k!! I'm sure you don't want to hear about spending more money right after buying the car but I had mine fully forged at Api,think they're pretty much the closest of the "big boys" to us. Had to wait a bit longer than expected but they seem genuine honest guys, have a chat with David he was very helpful I told him my goals and he came up with a spec required in stages so as to not totally break the bank.

Really feel for you.

Tom

Well just had it looked at the oil is clean showing no signs of contamination metal filings etc but until he gets it into his garage he can't be sure he said if the bottom end has gone its in the very early stages he started the engine no signs of and knocks but the oil light is on so was switched straight back off he suspects it could be the oil pick up or oil pump but he can't be sure so it's being recovered tomorrow to his garage for a proper diognosis cheers for all the advice guys I have a work van so transport isnt a issue until I know the outcome of the problem all I can do is wait

Gutted for you mate,,,,I had my hawkeye a week and fitted some gauges,, only to find I had very low oil pressure (under 1bar) so I took out the pump and found that the bolts inside that hold it together had worked loose and was only being held together by one bolt and the loose one were about to foul on stuff that would of sized the pump up

Tis is how my pump was when we took it out ,,, look at the bolts as that's how it came out the car
