Engine advice
Hi everybody,
I have a 1996 (grey import) WRX STI 2 door.
The car has a TD05 20G turbocharger fitted, manual boost controller.....and possibly remapped. I bought the car with these modifications and did not put them on myself.
So i bought the car as it was a 2 door and have always wanted one.
When I purchased the car it had a spun crank and was making a lot of noise as they do.
I had an old turbo 2000 model lying around so decided to use the bottom end from that and bolt on all the manifold, turbo etc from the original 2 door engine.
Started her up and she ran great and sounded perfect.
Drove her for a bit and the only fault code I had was 24(MAF). So I fitted a new MAF. Then low and behold took her out for a test and she lost power and made the dreaded creaking metal sound from the engine like an old metal wheel barrow wheel noise.... the crank has gone on this engine.
So I rang a few engine builders including Chris Palmer in Bristol. They have estimated for an engine rebuild including a 2.5 bottom end at........around £5,500!
So my question is what is my best route to get my 2 door running with around 340bhp? I am not being cheap but I cant really afford £5,500 but happy to spend in the 4 figures.
If I stick with the TD05 20 turbo and get a rebuilt standard engine who is best to take it to to have the engine remapped to this turbocharger? And what price is it likely to be.
Thanks in advance for any help.
James

Someone will be along with more knowledgeable information that I can possibly provide, but 340bhp seems to be right in between a rebuilt unit with remap, and going the whole hog uprated internals, extra ancillaries etc. Looking forward to seeing what others suggest.
Oh, and welcome!

Hi,
Thanks for the advice and I have sent the email to Williams motorsport and asked the question.
Like I said i just cant swallow spending £5,000 on a car that even with that rebuild done in immaculate condition wouldnt be worth more than £3,000.
Thanks
James
