Default AVCS impreza head removal?

I'm literally stuck on head removal for AVCS heads, all cam caps removed bar the top right one as it will not drop off, the end of the cams hex is tighter than anything I've ever known... Is there anyone you could kindly please tell me how it what I'm doing wrong ...

If you can not undo the 10mm Allen key bolt which holds the AVCS pulley to the snout of the cam (they are tight), then drill down the center of the bolt to just below the washer face to release the clamping force of the bolt - start will a 5mm bit and finish off with a 10mm bit. Bolt will easily come out then.
Dont forget to clean out any swarf from the oil return hole down the center of the camshaft if its the Inlet camshaft you are having trouble with.

Thanks for your reply, it's actually both, I have gone and bought a 10mm hex in a 1/2 break bar, I can lift the engine with it on there and it won't budge!!!

Ok try this, make sure cambelt is back on.

Get a bit of tissue/ roll up flat and place under cam cap at end and tighten by hand, get an adjustable spanner & get someone to hold the cam still (off lugs on cam near front thrust face) then try with even pressure to crack the bolt off.

Let us know of it works?

Hello thanks for reply, the front spanner holder as such is that tight to the front face with the AVCS you can't get a spanner on, iv now tried it which I think is what you mean down the cam shaft with the letters on it and the adjustable spanner on there, with a break bar on the front again, however it still will not budge ... Iv never ever known anything so tight it's ridiculous.

You will have to use a spaner on the camshaft mate ,i had to buff the edges off the side of the spaner to get. It into camshaft but i had the engine out car i wouldnt try it with the engine in and yes the bolts can be very tight prob put in with lock tight mate

In the 2nd pic you will see the hex part on the camshaft next to the sprocket you can buf the sides of a spaner to get to fit think its a 27mm but you will haave to put the camshaft cap bolt back into place before you try to undo the sprocket mate

Only use spanner on the lugged part of the cam near the front (close to pulley)

Position the engine (turn engine over) until it gives you a better position to get a correct fit with spanner (fidely due to buting up on headcastong). Put paper under rear end cam cap & tighten up.

They can be a nightmare & very tight, done one last week and was the same. If you cannot crack it off then drill the head off as described earlier in thread. Make sure you clean all swarf out afterwards.

Keep @it, eat some wheatabix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
