Default Tuning.

Hey guys,

Ok, so I've had the wagon for a couple of months now and other than a set of new tyres, some hella supertones and a good claying / valeting I've just enjoyed driving it.

But now I want more!

The car:
2004(53 plate) WRX PPP Wagon
70k on the clock with full history including original purchase receipt. Well looked after.

So, ideally I'm looking for a good, SAFE 350bhp fast road car with some of the characteristics of the stock TD04, i.e: fast spool up, but with more mid/top end where the TD04 runs out of steam.

What's the best, most cost effective way of achieving this?

AF hybrid TD04h? VF34?

Also what supporting mods? Not just the mods to get it there, but to make it a safe 350bhp?

And what would I be looking at in terms of costings for the parts, RR and mapping?

Thanks,
Scott

Ideally, to name a few mods...

3" turbo back system (that's my choice, but 2.5" would do)
Fmic or sti top mount (but scoop an under tray would be needed)
Walbro fuel pump
Pink injectors
Vf34 or ported front entry TD05 (which I prefer... Cos I've got one lol)
An a good mapper

Andy Carr did mine, not sure where you are. But the mans a wizard.

I'm sure there'll be something that I've missed. But as long as you've got it mapped good an true, you should see those figures above.

If people start banging on about the gearbox, check you box code, if its a TY754. You'll be perfectly fine for 350, just go be a maniac through the gears...

Cheers man,

Whats the spool up like on the TD05 compared to the VF34?

I was thinking along the same lines:

2.5" Turbo back system keeping my prodrive backbox.
STI TMIC.
Walbro 255.
STI Pinks.
VF34.
Turbo blanket and wrapped uppipe to keep charge temps down.
Green panel filter.
Remap.

I'm in North Wales, but don't mind traveling for a good mapper.

My gearbox is a TY754, I was also considering scoobyclinics gearset at a later date too, just to have 'safe' power.

I never really launch the car and don't rag the box when changing.

Just aiming for a nice, fast road car with safe usable power.

sc36 would be a better choice.

Cheers, all I'm looking for is fast spool up like the TD04, maybe mapped to come in a little earlier and a little harder, with more mid/top punch where the TD04 gives up.

What's the SC36 like?

Dam expensive!!

I forgot about the up pipe.

I'm getting the Harvey smith one next week.

A lot of people say the TD05 is laggy, an it is I suppose. But no where near the hype makes it to be. I've got ported headers on mine. Custom (shortened) fmic kit, an soon to have the trick up pipe. If I've read an understood the bumf correctly. I should see full boost 1.3bar by 3400rpm. Which I can live with.

An she's quick enough now. Guesstimating 340bhp ish...

I wouldn't say expensive, there about on par with others if you buy new. You can pick up second hand vf35's/td05 easier, but they wont spool as quick or get the top end.

realy depends on what you want from it, other thing is if you did the mods and add a sc36 what would you be getting then

I don't mind shelling out if what I'm buying is good and does what I want.

As I said, I wont be going over 350bhp, not at least until I either get the scoobyclinic gearset or a 6 speed.

The plan is to start sourcing all the parts ready to go, although the gearset will have to wait a little longer as it aint cheap! Hence only going 350 for now.

In the meantime I'm going to upgraded the turbo hoses to Samco or SFS, Exedy clutch kit and get the Godspeed grooved discs and pad set.

The first search I've just done, came in at £950 for the sc36, an that was eBay.

I kinda see what your saying though. For more productive results, the 36 would be the better option. Just WELL outta my price range lol

Quarter the price of my entire car lol

Haha, it's probably going to end up that way.

I think I should buy a turbo that'll max at about 360bhp.

That will stop me going silly or make me buy another turbo later lol

Mine runs a HS TD05 20g with tubular headers and a Harvey up-pipe.

Spool is very early with 1 bar below 2800 rpm.

Haven't had it dynoed, but Bob Rawle, who mapped it, estimated an easy 400/400.

That sounds nice. Although I'd choose a more conservative map to keep to around 350 until I get the better gearset or 6 speed.

Mine already has the 6-speed, as it's a 2.5 forged conversion.

Not a cheap do.......

Exactly lol.

That's why I think I'll go to 350bhp on the std 5spd then save up for scoobyclinics gearset before pushing for more power.
