its a kinda open question mate..

what kinda power are you aiming for? what other mods are you planning?
are you planning to go stand alone ecu or ESL as the early cars arent a simple map?

as a remap is needed which a change of turbo/upgrade

Personally with the classic if your not aiming for crazy power id stick to either the td series or the vf series td's are a little stronger inthink (dont quote me) and they are a little more laggy compared to the vf series , have a look at andy forrest performance td05 20g's , obviously you will need suporting mods and remap as was mentioned by devious have a look at simtek ecu's or apexi ones if you want to uprate your ecu , if you want to stick to your own have a look at esl witch is a small board soldered to your own ecu allowing witch ever mapper you choose to carry out your map to alter figures on the ecu , i also have a 1997 so have done a fair share of research on them send me a message if your stuck with anything and ill try my best tp help out.
Regards
Jordan.

Mate your more than welcome to , the advice I offer usually isn't my own its been passed to me threw some other helpful fellow , I'm forever pestering Andy at AFP and also Andy from Ra Motor sports Developments lol , if you stuck with anything gimme a shout , I don't think there's a bolt on my car that hasn't been removed whilst undergoing my major restoration so I'd be glad to help. All the best.
Jordan.
