Default Older engine fit newer car okay?

Hi people i am new too scoobies and bought one with a big end gone. its a 2000 wrx turbo & Was thinking about a rebuild but was going to be a bit out my budget right now so think i will get a second hand engine just now but i was wondering if anybody knew what you had to do to fit an older engine say 97/98 into a 2000. Is the inlet manifold a straight swap? A/C fit on?
Anything else i would need to do?
Thanks for any help, much appricated

no mate not a straight swap, you would be surprised in fact!

sure the v3 or v4 engine will bolt in but the inlet manifold will need to to be of the same year- it will not physically fit. Also the coil pack locations are different and you go back to a mechanical idle control valve on the V3/4 engine. THEN, if you go ahead and fit the V3/4 engine with a V3/4 inlet manifold you will need a complete engine wiring loom from the same year too.... but the later version 5/6 ECU will need to be used too... which won't fit the V3/4 dash loom... so you need a V3/4 dash loom which won't work with the V5/6 dash, so you need a complete V3/4 dash.... and lighting looms from a V3/4 and even then you will need to bodge some wires and the indicator and wiper stalks to make them work. Think the aircon doesn't quite fit right either!

I know, i have a V5/6 engine in a V3/4 car! Unless the engine you are getting is a beast and in great condish, i'd leave it :-) all those bits you need are quite easy to get and not expensive from all the breakers, but if just want a standard(ish) engine in good running nick i would deffinately wait it out for a breaking V5/6 car. the amount of work is massive! ;-D

Yeah as far as I am aware. It's the different inlet manifold on v1-4 that makes life difficult as it just snowballs big style. Is possible to chop and space the inlet but not easy and like I say kind of pointless with the amount of breaking cars kicking about

As above, the heads have a differnt stud pattern, but any WRX engine will fit from V5 and newage WRX are the same (2.0)

Ok thanks for the info guys.
So what would you say is a reasonable price for a engine V 5/6??
Bit weary of buying an second engine just incase big ends are on their way out but there is no way of knowing whithout seeing and hearing them so hopefully can find one still in the car.

I can supply a rebuilt forged short engine for £1500, Mahle pistons, new bearings, new 11mm oil pump etc. or £1300 with sti rods.

Hi wms-racing thanks for that but I haven't really got that money just now or I would. Can only afford to buy a second hand one the now. Considering rebuilding this one now but only if crank isn't worn.
I have been told never to re-ground the crank as they don't last apparently, is this true???
Cheers for any further info guys

Thats correct, don't re-grind the cranks. The journal condition/size is ultra important.

I think this is why the big end has gone anyway as it had a rebuild roughly 10k not sure if the crank was re-ground or not but if I measure it I will soon find out

I may be able to get a 98 engine cheap but only problem is I would need change some bits but not sure if all parts would bolt straight on.
Does anybody know if heads from 2000 would bolt straight on to the 98 engine and run no problem? As this would let me use my origanal wiring loom and inlet manifold
Cheers guys for any advice
