Default Induction/MAF/intercooler question (newbie)

Morning all.
I've searched this lots and I'm left wondering, hopefully someone can explain.
If the MAF sensor is on the inlet after the filter, then the air passes through the intercooler and then into the cylinders, how does the ecu compensate for ACT after the intercooler? Surely the cooling effect of the I/C is not constant so the density of the air going to the cyclinders is not measured.
Is there another MAF or ACT probe in there somewhere that I haven't found yet (post I/C) or does the ECU calculate from flow before the throttle body and assume the flow through the MAF is the same as the flow after the intercooler? (Afterall, all the air going into the cylinders must pass through the MAF)
So what I'm then failing to understand (only because I don't have the answers to the previous confusion) is how the engine compensates for an uprated I/C. I figure it's a fairly simple concept - denser air needs more fuel, right?
Like I said, I've searced loads but maybe I'm searching for the wrong things/words.
Many thanks peeps,
Paul.
