Default Advice on fitting headers and a up pipe on the driveway

Thinking of tackling this one myself to save me some £££ of labour.
Just got a set of Harvey's ported headers n up pipe from Dawn Smith and want to say a big thank you to her.

Few tips on how to do this would be appreciated also could I re use the old gaskets or am I best off with new?
Will be doing this on the drive on stands anyone else done this?

Cheers
Martin

Yuuup axle stands will help as you need to take the down pipe off to get to one of the up pipe bolts, And when removing the down pipe theres one bolt at the bottom which is easy from under the car with a wobbler extension (not one of tubbys play toys).

It's not a hard job at all,

Good luck

Thanks guys. Yep it'll be on axle stands so I remove both front wheels? Undo downpipe then up pipe nuts before bolting off the headers?

Where's best place to source the gaskets tommy?

Thanks again guys

axle stands and wheels off and maybe remove or pull arch liner down a little.

i got my gaskets from subaru but im sure someone can help you with somewhere to get them from.

i have used cheap ones in the past and they blow in no time and considering the hastle of changing them its worth the extra few quid.

you'll need a blanket on ya then!!! i changed my mates system at the weekend and that wasnt even cold then, 3 hours changing the mani-backbox you start to wish you hadnt started it when a manifold nut feels about the size of A4 paper

ive my system cat back to change at the weekend too :'(

Might be worth the £100 in labour if a stud snaps in the turbo though, Martin.

Checked there ebay site bit a little confused on which ones I need lol. I know I have a new up pipe to turbo gasket couple of months ago so would need the two that go between the headers that right?

Martin, get some Plusgas or Eezit to free up the tight nuts and bolts. It's fantastic stuff.

When are you planning on doing it? I could pop 100 ml in the post to you if you like? That'd be enough if you don't apply it with a pressure washer!

Get a 'kin huge spanner to get the O2 sensor off the manifold - I found that mine was seized solid and getting the wiring off is a pig, but the only way I could get the leverage to remove it was after the headers were off the car.

Be prepared to cut away any of the heat shields that get in the way as they'll be rotten by now anyway. Finally, as you have a WRX you will have a CAT in the up-pipe unless it has already been changed - you'll need to remove the turbo, or remove an engine mount and jack the engine to get that out - it won't fit through the gap. Once you fit th new one it will drop through the gap, and after feeding it in from the top because you've removed the turbo you can guarantee that it will sit tight until your head is directly underneath (the voice of experience).

PS. Make sure it hasn't been run as the heat will cause the nuts and bolts to tighten - different metals - and more likely to snap/round off

Get the headers, less the up-pipe, off first. That bit will be easy and will make you feel good

Then remove the down-pipe from the turbo, disconnect the water hoses and iirc you can get the turbo and up-pipe out as a oner by removing only a couple of bolts. Then reassemble turbo/up-pipe and refit in reverse

Sent today, there are a few hundred mls so you'll have plenty enough. The only container I had to decant it into was a spray bottle, so that will be ideal for application. Use a paintbrush to get it in the cracks once you have sprayed it on.

Good luck!!
