rocker cover gasket(Drivers side)
hi all
I had a my rocker cover gasket leak repaired (By a friend) as i was on holiday and now it seems like its worse then before. because my friend left it at his yard and didnt test it. So i been driving around and the first 10 miles it smoked bad and now i am on 30 miles since. The smoking has stopped but i can still smell it.
My question is the new gasket set is brand new and only been on for 30 miles. if it is still leaking by say the weekend. can i take it off and reapply the gasket with some new sealant. how would i put the sealant on. just under the gasket or on the mating side?
Anyone got any good tips for me .
thank you dave

Possibly not leaking anymore just oil will have got onto the exhaust manifold and heat shields when the cover was taken off will take quite a while to burn off.

done one a few years back on a classic sti,
took it for a test drive and after about 5 miles started smoking
and coming out of the bonnet vent,
nursed it home thinking still f**ked but it was just exess oil on the exhaust ect,
trouble is it looks like someone has let a smoke bomb off under the bonnet
amazing what a couple of drops of oil will do on a hot exhaust.

i did this about 4 times. 1st with new gasket but not with new rubber washers, still leaked.2nd time with new washers and i thought it was still leaking so did again and snapped a bolt.did again after getting old bolt out and still thought was leaking so did again with sealant just on the cover side behind the gasket. i thought it was still bad as it was constantly smoking so took to my mechanic friend who spent ages trying to find where smoke was coming from. turned out every time i took cover off it would spill oil into exhaust heatshield and was obviously just sitting in there getting hot and smoking also lots of oil around the bottom of engine which would find its way to the corner of cover making it look like it was leaking.
he took the heatshield off and cleaned engine and its been fine since. i probably fixed it 2nd time round. my first subaru and my first lesson.

smear bit on both sides
make sure you remove half moons and seal those
i always tab a little on the washers too
tighten corner to corner etc
trick is all in the prep work clean/oil free/dry.
break cleaner and thinners helps

get under car and clean all the oil off and maybe take the exhaust heatshield off,can be done with normal jack and lay on your back. take for a drive and see if you still get smell/smoke etc.
