Default Engine question

Asking this on the behalf of a mate. He's bought himself a 1999 Impreza WRX with a blown engine and wants to know can he put a 1.6 litre unit from another 1999 Impreza into the WRX rolling shell?

He works in a scrappy so has access to a lot of engines, but can't afford insurance on a 2.0 Turbo engine. Thanks!

Yeah insurance on the car was gonna be a bit more than a standard 1.6 Impreza but as far as I've been told its not much more (he lives in the north so I think he's with Flux).

Disregarding insurance, is it even possible?
