It seems like the gate between each gear on my box is miles apart so was thinking of a shortshift/quick shift. Has anyone got this on there car and if so whats needed and is it a pain to fit. All help will be greatfully accepeted.

Is it 5 speed or 6? 5 speed QSs are quite easy to find, and pretty straightforward to fit: unbolt the arm from the transmission, undo a couple of clips and pull the old one out, the new one goes back in reverse. I had problems getting the new one to pop into the cup that it sits in, would be handy to have a mallet to hand to give it a few gentle taps. There are differences between different model years. make sure you get the right one. The hawkeye at least has a threaded top to hold the gearknob, a replacement QS may not have this so make sure you've got a replacement **** before changing. I found that driving to Halfords without a gear **** was a bit awkward!
6 speed is a different matter, I had real problems finding one for a hawk eye. If you're feeling flush then the prodrive unit is good, but it's the full linkage so not a job for the faint hearted, and pretty steep. I ended up importing one from the US:

Fitting a six speed is a bit more complicated (you can download instructions at the bottom of the page on the link above). The six speed has the lift reverse, so you have to fiddle about with the cable that lifts the lever on the box. The problem with that is you really need to get the car off the ground to reach it, and have a spare spare of hands so someone can lift the lever while you grab the other end of the cable. I balked at that and got my local garage to fit it, but have a look at the instructions and see what you think. If it's a 5 speed you've got you can get the TWM instructions here, they'll be much the same for any make:
