timming problem help please

Default timming problem help please

rite folks i have a 95 impreza and the water pump went on it so i took went and took the striped the timming casing etc down then lined up the timming to the marks and disconnected the tensioner and removed the belt took off the water pump and a few days later came and fitted the new 1 then went to fit the new belt then got a problem... the i line up all the cams then move the crank to it timminng mark and it cant get to it as its hitting the valves 3 teeth from timming and the valves its hiting is the inlet valves passenger side as the second im move that cam off its timming mark i can move the crank again to its mark nd when i move the cam back to its mark its a good 3 to 4 teeth out when it hits its stange as i only disconnected the belt has any1 else ever heard or had this happen as it doesnt make sence to me any advise would b great thanks

Are you lining to the correct marks, the crank pully to the line mark and not the arrow, did you not time it up before removing the belt?

i did so jay the only but the 2 cams on the passenger side moved when the belt was disconected but thats it when i went to put them bk the inlet cam just would go bk and i am using the correct marks i will go put take a pic and put it up its bugging my **** i have never had a prob like this

They will move but not by much, just turn them back to the marks but leave the crank pully at tdc

As said above, first thing you need to do is to have the crank in the safe position which has all the pistons halfway down the bores - then move the cam pulleys to line the marks up and fit the belt.

cheers its all timed up now nd spot on jay i was using the arrow on the crank and not the actual timming mark thanks jay
