Question undervoltage

Hi all,

looks like Im getting a slight undervolt on my 2002 WRX.
getting 13.5->13.7v..
I had a look yesterday at the neg' battery connection and removed, cleaned and re-tightened (it was a little loose).
I also did the same with the neg' connection to the frame next to the battery.
Positiv + connection on alternator is tight, as is the same on the battery.

This morning on way to work I was getting overvoltage 14.4v for a short time
but once warm it soon settled back to 13.6-13.7v again.

Would this indicate a regulator failing.?? or should next step be the 'earch mod' iv seen on here and google..

cheers
Vik

I'm not sure there is anything wrong! 14.4V is not over voltage - its fairly standard and the lower voltages you are seeing is because it is a "smart" alternator, when the load is low the voltage is lower and probably saves overcharging the battery.

See https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...lternator.html etc

I've found that you don't need the lights on to make sure you're battery is charged, it starts at 14.4v when car started and reduces once load is reduced as the battery is nearly full.

Anything between 13.5 and 14.5 volts is acceptable. What you describe is pretty normal voltages

OK.. thanks for the info...

that puts me back to Sq1 with my Scanauge powering off under heavy load...
my guess was undervolting at load and the scangauge thinking the IGN has gone off due to volt drop

cheers
