Default overheating issue

Alright chaps now i think i might be being just a little paranoid but wanna be safe than sorry i own a 2001 bug wrx and recently i dunno if its just me noticing but when the car is idling for a short while the temp guage goes all the way up to 3 quarters with the fans on soon as i start driving the temp shoots back down quite quick back down to normal ive checked the coolant looks clean as a whistle no bits or anythin so is this just the norm and i just havent noticed before as it has been quite a hot day today or could it be a problem

It should sit just under half at all times. Sounds like you may have an airlock in there somewhere. Has it ever blown it`s coolant out? Does the heater still blow hot at idle?

when car is cold.
turn heaters to hot. blower fan on full.
then take off the header tank cap and start the engine.
let it run on idle for 10 mins and it will burp the air out the top of tank.
you will see bubbles in the tank when its doing it.
dont rev the engine or it will overflow.
then top the header tank up if needed after burping.

Gauge should never read 3/4 anyway, my guess is an airlock

Well just burped it there must of been air in the system as wen I first started the car there was a few bubbles for the first 3 mins then it seemed to clear only question I have is how far up is the water supposed to be in the header tank as there doesn't seem to be any markings

Fill the header tank all the way, the expansion plastic bottle has a low / full mark

You should not top up the expansion bottle just the header tank, as mentioned fill to the brim.

Sounds like an airlock, the std dash temp gauge reads the same when the temperature is in the range 65 deg to 106 deg C so if its moved it hot !!!

cheers

Yeah gauge on dash should not move at all.

Also on that car. Burping the airlock is helped by press the top rad hose. Esp true if you have the original rad.

Also the core could be bad.
