Hi guys,

bought my first scooby about 3 months ago, (98 UK turbo 2000) was running great but within a week i found out why the guy sold it to me, the headgasket had gone so i sent it in to a reputable mechanic to get sorted,
anyway to cut a long story short, i got it back running terribly (after 9 weeks!) and have been on the internet for the past week looking to sort this problem of it not revving past 4500 rpm

I have re-timed the engine twice (as the guy left the covers off so i got a spare engine off a friend to use the covers from) and replaced spark plugs, ht leads, cam and crank sensors.

Worst part is it is throwing up no check engine light, it wasnt working at first as the bulb had been removed but after sorting that then unplugging the MAF sensor while it was running we got a code up by using the onboard in diagnostics so i reset the ECU and it is still limiting at 4500rpm but with no codes,

speedo works and have tried another MAF with the same problem,

Please help as it is killing me trying to sort this out

Sounds to me like the ecu is in 'safe mode' or get home safe mode, what are you using to read the ecu?

 

Strange because it sounds like its in limp mode.

 

Its definately in limp mode, what modifications does the car have and is it a uk or jdm car?
It could also be due to the fact the heads were not skimmed or skimmed and the gaskets used were not the correct ones to compensate so your compression could be out, you really need to take the car to a speciallist.

headgaskets were OEM ones from subaru, mods are FMIC, Fuel pressure regulator, was running actuator pressure but i have plumbed the standard boost control unit in to see if it will clear up but to no avail

heads were definitely skimmed, and pressure tested, its a uk spec and i used the onboard diagnostics (green and black plugs) to check fault codes and to reset ECU and its is 100% in limp mode, just cuts all power at 4500 rpm and its so bloody annoying when my mates just bought an evo 5 lol

does sound bit like ecu............. mmmmmmmmmmmm? mab its time for an alcatek. could be the car was infact mapped for an upgraded ecu and original ecu was re fitted ,and so now causing some problems. or possible carb mechanism faulty valve.could even be a pipe thats come off causing limp mode. air and petrol funny thing if not mixed rite.

 

reset ecu ok i red this somewhere, not only take leads of battery but press brake light pedal to remove all residual current. then leave for a couple of hours.

A couple of extra things to check.

Check the ECU earth to the back of the engine. Make sure the connection is clean and secure.

Also check the wiring has been routed correctly and that no signal wires pass close to or touching HT leads.

Speedo works perfectly, and as for the connections, all of them are bang on

Any more ideas please? It must be something.....
