pull the small return pipe off the header tank mate, fill the system until it comes out of the pipe and that should do it,.

There is no way to bleed the system if it gets airlocked. You have to drain and start again.

But the hose at the bottom shouldn't be as hot as the one at the top.

the lower tank should be filled then the upper expansion tank. there is a proper way to do it should be found on a search. they are buggers for airlocking.

Simple: it airlocks it.

Had you bothered to do a simple search on here, you'd have found the easy method.

I assume you used a 50% mix of antifreeze and water?

I did and read to fill it from the header.. Im assuming the header is throo the rad top hose and not the remote reservoir that has the rad cap ?

For the record.

With engine cold with a single entry rad.

The easy way is to

1. fill slowly from header tank.
2. press top hose repeatedly, air will burp out of the header tank.
2.1 leave cap off
3. run engine at 1500rpm until fans have cycled.

careful hot hose

4. press top rad hose again. air will burp out.
5. close cap.
6. go for a drive
7. wait for it to cool down. Remove header cap, fill up.

Or

method 2

remove top hose and fill water slowly.

Then start the burping thing again.

Check the lower coolant hose below the header tank, they are prone to leaking with age. esp bugeyes.

Or the method that AVOIDS airlocks and fills FROM THE BOTTOM:

Remove rear pipe from metal header tank, fill via that, using a funnel, SLOWLY, header tank cap OFF.When full, replace pipe.
Then run engine up to temperature watching for air bubbles and mopping/topping up as needed.
Finally fit filler cap, and go for a drive. Once it's cooled again, remove filler cap and refill as needed.
Do all this at the METAL header tank, with heater set to "hot".

This is very good advice. Me and Jeff (Alcazar) did this very same method last week when changing my leaking radiator. New coolant was mixed 50/50 with water in a jug or 1l bottle using the method above. When it came to checking for airlock and running the car upto temp for the fans to kick in, there were few bubbles and no airlock. I'd not done a coolant change before for fear of the dredded airlock, but it really is as simple as Jeff explains.
