Default EJ22 Build

Guys just looking for some help here,

Would an EJ22 N/A mpfi engine from a 1991 Subaru legacy be a good place to start with a 2.29 stroker kit build for my STI.

I have the heads from a version 6 fully ported and polished with JUN valve kit etc. just need to know am I wasting my time or should I just build the blown EJ20 I have..
I am looking for a 425-475bhp build and have guys @ sti tuning to carry out all the work.
Any suggestions and ideas greatly appreciated. Thanks Joe

Hi Joe

EJ22 yours is OBD(Open Block Deck) which will be OK for power which you are want,OBD have limits and they're OK for about the 450-500bhp with right components, but if you are will want ore power at future you will need get pinned or get CDB insert(Alyn@AS performance doing this at moment)

But doing this,i would go with 2.0CDB and 2.1 stroker kit which will be perfect in any situation or you can go with EJ22T, which people use mostly for 2.35L builds

Thanks very much for the info,
Ok so I can get this EJ22 open deck engine for free off a mates dad. Should I pin it and stroke the bollox outtve it or just stroke out the EJ20 open deck I have and get it pinned...im not looking for ridiculous power just something useable...
thanks again

As I said, with right components OBD is not issue, will be OK for 450-500bhp,but above that I would go with CDB or get your OBD pinned(or even better CDB insert)

At this level 450-500bhp i would say good pistons and good rods is must,12mm ARP studs,ACL bearing set,EJ257 crankshaft is something which i would add too

For pinning you are looking at £300-£500 and for CDB insert not sure,i would contact on here or 22b stockcar(Alyn@AS Performance) for prices

Don't forget to budget for a decent ECU (if you haven't got one already), Mapping & Rolling Road, after market sensors (wideband, temp, pressure etc) Insurance, Increased Fuel costs....

Interesting to hear that normal EJ22 can hold 400+bhp since thay are more or less free to buy

So something like EJ22 ODB with good stroker kit, uprated pumps and 12mm head studs will work with lets say MD321h billet all day long?
