Default 2002 Sti starting problems only when engine is warm/hot

Hi guys,

Ive just purchased a 2002 bug eye sti with the ppp pack.

Basially every morning on cold startup it fires up straight away.

Although if you were to stop at a fuel station ten mins into the journey turn it of and start it back up again, it struggles to start up again... it does eventually but have to keep it turning over for about 30 seconds or so then it fires into action...

This problem only happens when the engine is warm/hot..

Any ideas ?!

My mechanic says it could be the engine coolant temp sensor?

Any help help / advice much appreciated.

thanks

I had this about 5 years ago, it turn out to be a faulty Crank Position Sensor.

Does the car turn over but not fire?

Cheers

TB

cheers for reply tb

yeah basically it turns over and takes a while to fire up .... have to keep turning it over and it fires up after about 30 seconds or so....

Someone else said it could be that as well...

Did you manage to solve it by replacing the sensor?

Yes, also have a look at the connector to the sensor, if it damaged/cracked in any way it may be losing it's connection to the sensor when it expands a little due to the heat

I'll try this if my plugs don't fix things.

Of the sensors for this issue I think the crank position is the common one pointed to but IIRC my 95 classic WRX had this issue resolved only by the camshaft position sensor being replaced although I replaced the crank, then temp then finally the cam sensors. Ideally you would swap these for know good ones before buying the one(s) you need.
