Upgrade for a VF28 on V5 STI
I have done some research and seem to find conflicting advice everwhere I look. My car is running at 335 with the above turbo, FMIC, Decat, Walbro, air filter, and a remap by JGM. After 2 years of running this I need more.
I would like to get around 360bhp and improve torque. Mainly for pulling power on motorways as its quick enough around town.
SC billets are too expensive as are the 321's etc.
What about a VF34? 35/43 or 48 as these are considerably cheaper but will they make 360 ish with good torque?

Cheers Simon, I was looking at the SC range but I just carnt afford it. What would you suggest for my car and aims. They are a bit more modest since we last spoke!
VF34 or TD05 18G?

I've gone for a VF48 on my set up, heard good things about them, good for an easy 350+bhp with supporting mods obviously and above all affordable. mid range and spool up good apparently. I'll let you know once the engine is built and installed

so if aiming for a 360+ on a 2ltr i would be looking 18/20g,anything else is very expensive and im not sure that an 18g will pull 360+ on 2ltr?i came to the conclusion that the only way to get 360-400 on a 2ltr would need a 20g.
(without the use of meth obviously).
but just how laggy is the 20g? and whats the difference between a tdo5/6 20g?

ive seen many results from a vf34 normally fetching 330-340 with similar torque on 2ltr.(again without meth)

not from what i have seen, they are all similar on a 2ltr and will normally fetch 330-350.with alot less torque than a 2.5 ltr.

I replaced my STi 5's VF28 with a TD05H 20g (and obviously all associated supporting mods added) -- mapped by Simon to 384/349.
Obviously the 20g is a tad laggy when compared to the VF28... but considerably more powerful/torquey once it does come on boost.
As 99gw implies, if you want to all but guarantee your 360 goal then, at the very least, a proper 18g (e.g. one from harvey) will be needed. Getting 360 on the VF34/35/43/48 is unlikely (but you might get near).

the vf48 is an excellent turbo for a 2.5ltr,but on 2 ltr will fetch about 340/320,but mid range punch is very good and nice and smooth.

You need to worry about the engine, 13+ years old and 350bhp is deemed as top end reliability, they use to rebuild these at 320bhp in the early days, and those engines were not tired or have as many miles on the clock, so note that I would not want to really want to run more than 320-330bhp on any classic 2ltr turbo engine (they are not like the new age STI engines which are much stronger).
Stick with a vf30/34/35/48 and go for drivability rather than out and out power.

Well my vf36 is on full chant by then in comparison (standard car btw), but that really doesnt say anything, it gets there quite quickly from 1k to that also
With a 20G its going to seem an age in reality, single scroll will suffer badly with lag on a turbo that size, no matter what anyone say's, its going to be pretty laggy compared to a vf48.

For the win.
Never!
Depends if I decide to take the plunge and change to twin scroll.
Already accrued the headers/uppipe/sump/440 injectors. Just need the 440s flowed to 930cc by Lateral, a GC8-pattern TS d/p, and of course the turbo - SC42 Billet, probably.
But will I do it...................? Answers on a postcard to...
If I do do it, you can have first refual on the 20g. Been on since Nov. '10 (fitted by API) and been working/delivering the goods beautifully lol.

Currently have a V5 Sti myself which i only aquired recently after 2 UK Turbo's wish i had of made the choice sooner tbh such a better car!
Getting it remapped on the 14th by JGM can't wait Only upgrade's ive made is full deca, walbro 255l upgraded fuel pump and panel filter change... Quite like the VF28 but its enevable its going to stay that way very long
Anyway already been looking at turbo's like the Op and have stopped at the MD series yes bit expensive but Produce good figures etc.
joz8968 had a look at yours in your garage very nice bud! By the looks you've never rebuilt your engine or upgraded your gearbox? If so thats good don't know the capabilites of these cars so found that intresting...

So far so good. But I rarely hoon... And if I launch from rest, it's only prob. circa 1 in 100 times! Seriously. In any case, I always get the wheels rolling, rather than dump all the torque into the drivetrain in one go! Ouch!

Yep. Original engine and 'box. With c.47k on 'em. API 'red' modded/uprated oil pump though.
