How strong do you think your gearbox is?
How good is your clutch?
How many other parts will you need to replace/upgrade?
When you come to the conclusion that pretty much the entire car isnt that good for over 350bhp (and note they use to rebuild these engines with better internals in than the car you have) at 320bhp, and dont ask how much it will cost, lets just say you could buy a much (13 years) newer car for the money

your going to need at least 8k to even get close to 400hp im afraid not to mention the brakes and suspension.
stick to 300hp, thats more than quick enough for the road.
this is just my oppinion of corse

16G I believe.
To be honest, I wouldn't be turning the wick up on a car with an engine and gearbox that old. The old gal has done you proud if she's got this far without needed an engine/gearbox refresh.

Although it's a old car it has sweet sounding cdb with fmic, apexi ( with commander),helix clutch ,recon box and go kart suspension ;-) .also it's a toy not a daily driver and if it does go pop im sure he'll sell his brv a few choice parts for a packet of pork scratchins and a pint ;-) .go on brv get a bigger turbo lol

Lol i thought i might get a bit of a hammering for this post. But like my bruv says i use the car maybe once a week and not for any length of time its only got 50k and the lump has been well looked after. A ride a aprilla rsv factory 1000 so 300bhp in a road car just gets abit boaring for me and it would be ashame to keep it basicly standard as ive just put my new japspeed headers on, got the 4pots wiv braided hoses in the garage and got another set of 440s to send off to lateral to get reflowed/matched. As its a toy when its breaks ill just have to fix it but in the meanwhile just wanted abit more power then a the 16g can give me as its going up clives in norwich for another remap any time soon and dont fancy wasteing my money and his time just a bhp or 2
Has anyone got any info on turbos please

CDB means sweet fa, its the internals that are the issue, damn even an ODB can run 500bhp.
These engines (especially the early ones) are not that strong, when it goes pop it normally does it in spectacular fashion, piston through the block, chance of engine fire as the rather warm oil goes everywhere etc.
Stick to what you have been told or buy a different car, you wont get a reliable car out of this or just stick to bikes, you would require 500+ to have the fun you think you want out of a car (though if you think like that then you have missed so many opportunities on which cars to buy )
And get the car remapped for your headers/injectors or it will det its little head off

i been told by a few people that there is a possibility that mine could be forged as the import v1 wrx sti's engines were hand built with forged pistons and had a cdb. is this not true?

Basically your starting point isnt good, but for 300bhp, it should do if you think its a little boring then still plenty to spend your money on upgrade the suspension and go for decent brakes, that will help to start with

Nope, you still have pretty much the weakest engine available in turbocharged subaru's, you do have dogbone forged pistons but those are not as good as the later versions, the rest of the engine is similar to all the other classics, ie not that good, then you have the gearbox.... its a ty752, weakest of the boxes, your clutch... also sucks, subaru 4 pots, hey even I replaced mine on an MY00 to Brembo/AP combo as they were not that good (though better than the 2 pots).
Basically your starting point isnt good, but for 300bhp, it should do .

If you want to get reliable power, forge it up, 6 speed conversion, clutch... but as it's been mentioned, it's going to cost you.
I would like to go down this route one day.
Thanks
Sam

these are SMALL 16g variants. Quite small.
peak power occurs at 20-24psi/ near 1.7-8 bar
300bhp is not unheard of over in the states with a proper map. the maf will max out at 18psi, beware

Just thinking of the turbo, will be using MAP not MAf. wounder where the end of the compressor map for a standare 16G turbo is and how the CFM translated into real figures.
Most people go for a bigger turbo before pushing the one they have. (Unless U have a TD04 LOL)

Well I am already thinking the 16G has lots to offer, i have 440cc at the moment and i know i need 550cc . If it gets sorted soon i will post a dyno plot and see what people think.

as much as i hate to say it tony is right unless you are willing to spend serious moolah and trust me it gets expensive, btw the v1/2 cdb dont really have forged pistons, i think its hypereutical cast or something like that but they are better than normal cast pistons but v1/2 pistons are ****e
