Default Blown Turbo, STI, Blob Eye 54

Hi guys,

I've currently got my car in at SG Petch in Richmond North Yorkshire (Subaru Specialist).

I noticed I could hear my turbo spooling louder than usual so I took it in. They said I needed a new down pipe at the cost (all in) £655. They said take it back home (8mile round trip) as we need to order parts.

Parts arrive and take it in and the drive there I have no boost and very little power so drove very light footed.

They ring me back saying turbo has gone and oil in inter-cooler.

Does this mean both downpipe and turbo has gone as well as inter-cooler? Or could they of got it wrong and only turbo needs replacing and Inter-cooler draining. They quoted £1000 for a new turbo not said for labour yet so lets see how long they think it will take to fit.

My main concern is if any further damage has been done in the 8-10 miles I've drove it after I took it in to them but they sent me away in it.

They have had it a week and every time I ring up they make me feel I'm putting them out like ohhh we still haven't stripped it to see what we need to do. I get the feeling they aren't rushing too much as they know I can't really go take it to another garage.

Has anyone had a full turbo replacement and what should it cost all in approx?

I'll update as and when I get info, which will be tomoz as I'm just going to call a bluff and say i'm coming to come and collect it with a trailer to seeif that speeds them up. POOR POOR SERVICE DO NOT USE SG PETCH.

Certainly feels like that, but there is no real Subaru specialists nearby and don't really want to take it to a none specialist garage who aren't as knowledgeable.

Let me get this right they want to charge you £655 for a down pipe fitted!!! WTF you can get an RCM one for half that price, As far as the turbos go a VF 35 which is what you should have fitted you can pick up for £300 second hand, Oil in the inter cooler is not uncommon in some cases and is an easy job to sort out, I'd get the car out of there now if I were you

Yes I thought it was costly, this will give you an idea I needed a new passenger side wing mirror, Glass only. They quoted 74.99 and were KIND enough to say they wouldn't charge too fit. LOL EBAY 9.99 later and fitted myself.

What a Legend Harvey Smith is.

Rang the Subaru dealer today for an update (10 days already had my car for a blown turbo) they said looking like next week before they look at it zzzzzzz.

Rang Harvey Smith up he seemed very helpful and has offered to go and collect it from the garage tomoz and take it to his. I willbe meeting him there tomoz to make sure the garage give him it.

Lets see what and how fast he can look at it to tell me what else may need doing it. So far a 5min conversation with him has inspired me with 1000 times more confidence than those rip off merchants at the main dealer.

Dont sound right at all. Take your car to a well known recommended tuner. 'Some' oil in the intercooler is normal.

As above Harvey Smith has a good rep & very good prices.

That level of service from Harvey certainly intills confidence in him.
I'm sure he;ll have it sorted in a fraction of the time at a fraction of the price too.

Was that 9.99 for a heated glass out of interest? V cheap if so, or u may have replaced it with a non heated one?

Main dealers are often fully booked up for a week or to in advance, as opposed to smaller garages, hence why it's not been looked at yet, not necessarily fobbing u off... I'm not sticking up for them just trying to see it from both sides of the coin lol (I work for a main dealer)

Don't forget, the standard downpipe has a big cat in it!

The cat(s) could be contaminated with oil, now?

The 9.99 was for a standard mirror glass, not heated.

If I had broken down and got towed in then maybe waiting 10 days and still no service done then maybe but I BOOKED in and they said yes Mr Wood bring it in on xxx day which I did for then to say 3 days later Turbos blown we will look into it to see if anything else, sevral days and phone calls later still not looked at it Grrrrrrrrrr.

YIPPPEEEE!!! Harvey Smith came as promised bang on 14:30 to the garage to collect my car the very day after calling him and telling them the problem. The garage tried to charge me £18 per day for storage.... I was laughing waiting for Jeremy Beadle to jump out only to realise they wern't joking. A few stern words and they broke like a kit kat.

Look forward toa decent service from Harvey's and will see the damage to the wallet tomoz

Well,

Main dealer wanted £1000 for just a replacement vf35 Turbo. That's not including labour.

Harvey Smith's provided an uprated turbo VF43 then remapped and oil and filter change for £1050.

Not sure yet who's doing the mapping as the bloke who does the mapping is coming from Swindon but not until the New Year so he's fitting the uprated turbo and said to keep off boost until re-mapped.
