Default What power is likely to be had ?

Im hopefully purchasing a JDM Bug this week, and as per usually Im going to commence with the mods, however as the car is relatively standard at present im just going for a 3inch Full decat, Uprated panel filter & Walbro.

So with the standard VF30 what power is it likely to see? Im hazarding a guess at 340/340, however I was also thinking of putting the methanol thats in my shed to some good use.

I ran methanol in my last car with no issues producing some good results, but im not sure what the VF30 can handle, 20%, 30%+ (maybe more) meth mix?

Going forward (winter project) im aiming to push it close to 500bhp with supporting mods, but for the meantime I would be happy with something more than just standard!

I tried a search on here with "VF30 Methanol" but it doesnt pull any results, so I guess if this has been tried before its not been publicised.

Comments please

Rob

Hi Rob,

vf30 as said should make 330~340bhp on vpower and I would hope to see 350+ on meth.

Also being a JDM bug there is the option to use Ecutek Megarom which would then allow two full maps so you can have meth and no meth, along with per gear boost control and launch control

Not sure to be honest, I havent even bought this car yet as I havent had time to go and get it, hopin to get it by the end of the week. My previous MY02 STI was running with a GT30 somewhere over 400/400 with 20% meth, but I never dyno'd the car so my claim isnt backed up, however I then broke the car for parts, and on inspection of the bottom end (bores) and heads the engine was looking very healthy which is always good to know when you think you might be pushing it too far , but at least I know I will be using meth again. The GT30 made 442bhp on a previous car, although im not sure of its capabilities, but I sold this on so this isnt an option this time. I was thinking maybe a MD321T or simular, but again I havent given it much thought at the moment. Up until three weeks ago I was giving he Subaru Daily driver a miss, but I miss not having the power under right foot when required .

Thanks Simon, thats great to know. I had a VF30 in my UK300 and although it was mapped safe it did seem to be a good turbo. I was just concerned that it was a bit of a "unusual turbo" to try and push, but without changing anthing turbo-wise pre new year I figured that I may aswell try and get the best I can out of the current cheap set uo, and with 180L of meth in my garage I may aswell use it

I have used Andrew Carr in he past for mapping as he is local and very helpfull, plus we traded work which is always good with the bank balance. If you think you can tempt me a price or service drop me a PM .

What kind of torque do you think the VF30 on meth might bring, Im just thinking about the cluch at this stage.

Thanks,
Rob

the vf30 is not a bad unit, not as nice at vf34, vf35, vf43, vf48 but works nice and should see a good gain mapping it, especially on the meth.

Andrew is a good friend, I wont try and steal custom off him

Thanks for the replies Simon I might be able to do a little more to it too prior to mapping, ive got some headers to hand. Feel free to quote mapping, he's had enough of my money! I think the clutch is a 20k old Exedy, not sure what yet so hopefully this will see me though for a while, well until I start tweaking here'n'there!

Still having fun Dunx! Have you managed to do your running in miles yet? Would be nice to see the old man in action (I was refering to the car lol)

Matt although some will disagree with me here, watch your gearbox if your power hunting the 5 Speed. I stripped a gear a few years back in my UK300 with a VF30 at only 330/320 ish. Im sure if nursed they can take 400lb, but I wouldnt want to go through all that again, plus if you have reasonable power on tap your bound to want to use it until "boom".

JGM

His wideband lambda(prob means more to you!) wasnt available so didnt push the ignition too much at the top end. Hoping a tweak will give a few more top end ponies but drives lovely in meantime

Rob, box is something to think about for sure but i wont be going crazy, still std wrx internals as well. Box may well cry enough at some point and funds allowing would do 6 speed swap. Once ive had this last tweak that will prob be it tbh, makes a cracking b road blaster as it is!
