Default use sealant for replacing cam cover gasket?

Afternoon all,

Whilst the engine's out my car I need to replace the rhs cam cover gasket as well, as it's been leaking oil onto the exhaust.

Unfortunately I've bought the gasket for the wrong side, but when i took the cover off earleir to have a preliminary look, there was a load of red coloured stuff all in there as well... presumably some kind of sealant.
Is this strictly necessary when refitting these, or should i just scrape it off before i fit the replacement on tuesday night?

If it is necessary, what is it and where do i get it?

thanks,

Mark.

I always use tiger seal adhesive, then let it cure for 12hrs before starting engine. Nothing worse than putting engine back in to find it leaking oil

The sealant was porbably used to make sure the gasket sits properly on the cover instead of getting crushed when putting it together.

thanks guys... they both look very similar other than the temperature range, so presumably it wouldn't do any harm to go for the "hotter" of the two?

Or should I definitely choose one over the other?

confused!

Yep definately use sealer mate .

Just rebuilt my engine and re-fitted it and its leaking from that very same place

Didnt think i would need it as i fitted all brand new seals when building.

thanks folks.
local motor factors didn't have anythign suitable, and halfords only have either the black on above or a clear one, so i guess i'll go for the black one, unless anyone has any reason that I shouldn't? I'm still a bit concerned about the specified temperature range being enough or not...

well,what a bitch of a job that was !!

on a 95 WRX,having to remove tha irbox etc,not a problem, but, that last bolt, where it generally leaks from, what a pain !!!

in the end,i had to cut a 1/4" drive size 10 socket down on each end to make it fit between what i think is the front subframe and the bolt itself, i tired using a spanner but it was very tight, wouldnt budge !

done it all now, used the copper 350 C sealant, letting it all cure before i start it so fingers crossed, there is sealant spewed out a little so hopefully that will fill any holes/gaps the new seal (genuine) has
