mate get someone who knows what they are looking at , they are prone for the rocker gasket leaking oil on to the headers the wifes classic did this and yes you get smoke out the vents , just get it checked properly

have a look yourself the heads are on the side of a subaru engine, there is a plate wich the spark plugs are on! will have the leads going to them or 4 separate coil packs. this is the rocker cover. look to see if it has a oil leak with the engine running. remember inspect both sides. it may be dripping onto your headers, burning and coming out of the scoop as you mentioned
hope this helps

I can't see a way that the rear crank seal will be able to pass oil to reach the exhaust, maybe the front one but that is an easy job, certainly not a £500 one anyway!

The chances are it is not serious nor particularly expensive.
Telling you iti s probably an oil seal and that such a repair is £500 is bollocks. Don't go back to that garage again.
Chances are it is a cam cover gasket, a common fault on these Subaru engines.
Get in touch with David at API and they can probably diagnose the problem while you wait.
They are at Banbury, Warwickshire.
