Speed sensor failure

Speed sensor failure
Hello,
Speedo stopped working on my '05' Impreza GX Sport then the 'Malfunctin indicator' warning light came on.
I have taken it to my local Subaru garage who have said 9 times out of 10 it is the gearbox sensor which is the issue. This was changed but was not the issue!! (I wasn't charged for this)
Now they are telling me that the issue is the drive failure which will cost approx £600 + vat if it takes all day to fit.
Does this sound right? anyone else had this issue?
Cheers

i know on the earlier impreza's they are manual cables ie not electric and when the speedo cable snaps it brings up the engine check light which in turn makes the car run like a pile of crap in limp mode however im afraid on the newer one im unsure perhaps it could be the clocks not passing the speed info back to the ECU? btw it was the same fault code when i got the ecu read!
