i have had mine done recently, u will need more than just the gaskets to be safe, i had water pump, cam belt kit, radiator, thermostat done, i also got my clutch done as its worth it while the engine is out. its really not a cheap job, if you would travel i got mine done by a good garage in macclesfield but depends on if you want to travel

i got mine very cheap to be honest. i had the headgaskets and inlet manifolds from main dealer, clucth was a pink exedy, cam belt kit from jap imports and the garage a i used was a frined who did it cheap but he was a austin martin mechanic and his friend was a impreza main dealer mechanic and total cost including parts was £1600 which to be honest is a bargain. as the clucth was 300, cambelt kit was 270, rad was 150, oil water pump filter and thermostat was 110. main dealer parts were just over 300 so u get an idea of how cheap a deal he did me for labour

on a classic mate your looking at £850 for head gaskets to be done it involves normally removeing the engine taking both heads off getting the heads skimmed and presure tested for cracks new gaskets head bolts etc and refitting together then fitting back in the car job done

When I thought my head gasket had gone I got a couple of quotes one from a specialist in Newbury £1600 and one from a chap in Banbury for £900 but neither included having the heads skimmed should it be required.
It may be more cost effective to buy a replacement engine

Luckily for me it was the CV boots had split and sprayed the exhaust with oil on my car.

I paid 350 on my last classic a couple of years ago, a lad I know is a mechanic who is on his 11th impreza, did both heads in a couple of days. Obv didn't have heads skimmed at that price but it lasted fine till I sold it a year later (std power). Price included a new cam belt, he had a few in his workshop

api will look after you mate, i cant recomend them enough and there customer service is excellent

i pay £50 for a pair heads skimmed locally, if you dont skim them the week link is still present. also clean and regrid all valves, reshim lifters and fit new gaskets all round.

do it once and do it right
