Default Lambda Sensor positioning

I need to replace the Lambda Sensor on my 95WRX. I know the original one is in the drivers side header, I doubt it will come out easily . There is a bung in my downpipe and I am pretty sure I have read on here that it is a better place for the Lambda but I cant find the thread that I thought said that .

Can anyone confirm that I can put the new Lambda in the downpipe and that it will read correctly - I am sure the wires will reach and if not I can always extend the loom!

As people have said, i have had a couple fail in the headers due to the pressure's there,
A mapper told me that the downpipe is a better place for it.
