Default CDB question

Hi chaps I've just bought an early classic As a bit of a project
And it has a closed deck block and a few other bits and bobs , it was dyno,d last month at 307 , drives well , my Plan is have a bit of fun in it , until winter
But it's gettin a fair bit of stick and I keep thinking the motor is gonna go pop
My question is , how rare are closed deck blocks and will I be kickin myself if I break it before I get round to building it into s nice forged engine or are cdb not that important for the makings of a strong quality motor
Cheers tony

It all depends on the bhp expectation you have of your next build. The cdb is the ideal basis to start from as it is the strongest, although not essential for less than 450bhp ish really.

They are getting rare, but as they were in the early Imprezas, there's still plenty knocking about running in cars.

Depends how much power. If you want 600 then CDB. If 450 the ODB will be fine.

I wouldnt say they are rare as the 22T's but you can get hold of them for about 300-400 quid.

Thanks chaps , as far as power aims , you know how it is
It starts to get addictive and a never ending circle of wanting more
My thoughts at the moment are a nice strong motor running at around 400
The block is a bonus I didn't expect, it's worth a quarter of what I gave for the car , seems a shame to lose it if it could come in handy
The thing Is I've no idea who's messed with the car in the past
I'm gettin fuel cut at 1.2 bar so I should ease off or it's gonna be scrap

They are the best known block to have when going for a big bhp build, but there are ODB's out there running over 500bhp without issue.

The CDB is the one people tend to choose though, still a fair few around aswell so i wouldn't worry to much.

Hard to answer your question without knowing what mods etc you have

Mods as far as I know are modded td05 , fmic ,exhaust
And thats all I know, ive not stripped or touched it to check anything ,
Just been thrashing it round for the last couple of weeks
I must admit I was very sceptical of the quoted power 307.2 at 1 bar ,but when I picked it up he gave Me the dyno charts and receipts , do you think it's about right with those mods

To be honest, I don't think it's going to make a huge difference is it? If you blow the engine (short of firing a rid through the block itself...) in all likelyhood the block will still be ok to build back into a nice forged motor.
Somebody will be along soon to put me right on this but that was my understanding....or I could be just thinking about the 2.1 stroker builds?

I thought the biggest weak point was the rods , as for other damage like main bearing failure , I've no idea of the consequence on these engines

An engine builder will tell you that its cheaper to re-build a motor BEFORE it starts knocking.

If you build it using the existing crank and the bores are good, the cost is kept down, if you break it chances are you will need a crank and a re-bore which will cost an extra £500-600, more if an engine builder is doing the work, the choice is yours!

Ok cool, cheers chaps as an answer to the OP then- you won't be "wasting" your CDB per-say....although you will incur more costs on the build....
