Default Heater and internal thermometer / thermostat

Hi all, moved this from "Interior" as it was getting little attention...! Hope thats ok!

1994 V1 Sti

My heater is not great at getting the temperature right in the car. Its generally way too hot and only goes cold at its lowest setting or with A/C on.

If run for a while (say 30-40 mins) it seems to improve. I have replaced the thermostat, flushed cooling system and replaced external temp sensor seated infront of the rad.

When looking under the dash in the passenger footwell and moving the temp dial I see that the arm moves from full extension to full extension within 90 degrees of the *** turn, ie, from hottest to middle, but then not at all from middle to cold because its already moved as far as it can.

Is that normal?
Is there a temp sensor behind the little grate on the controls? Is it replacable?

id say thats how my heater works on my 95 wrx v limited. i find it odd.
i would say the point on my dial where it changes from hot to cold varies from 1 week to the next, mostly i get 1 or 2 clicks from cold (8-9 oclock) then its warm till about 12 oclock then hot all the way to the end, but sometimes it goes to 12 oclock before it gets warm then hot. ive replaced thermostat and flushed system.

I guess this potentially means the internal dial thermostat / temp sensor is screwed....does the temp switch have a thermostat in it like a fridge for example, or is there a little sensor behind that grill? If I can change that I reckon it would cure it.

Its not so bad in summer as you just whack air con on or have heater all the way to Cold which fixes the issue. Notch it one up from there and it turns into a furnace though!

mine is the same, thought it was fixed when i replaced the thermostat but it was tricking me, and as for the aircon i have given up on it, its been fixed twice since i have had the car and its still useless, not wasting any more money on it.

Ok well I am going to try some more Google-ing to see if I can find out how internal temp is measured and see if this is a replacable sensor.

Incidentally my Aircon is fine, gets pretty cold if a little funky when it first starts up. Its inbetween cold and hot thats the problem. It is not linear at all and the auto fuction is useless. I am sure this is related to the car not being able to tell what the temperature is inside or something.
