ok i would say it sounds more like a click but clunk will do lol.. my rear drivers side wheel makes a clunking sound when going over very bumpy roads mainly if it hits hard into a pothole..

could it be the spring? and how can i inspect and what could be wrong with it?

 

its a 96 wrx sti with standard shocks with eibach lowering springs
