Default Air induction valves...

All,
I am looking at an '05 Hawkeye WRX. The guy who is selling it has written the following:

'The engine warning light is on. However I have taken it to a specialist and this is only the air suction valves which l have been quoted £464 to put right. I do have the the supporting paperwork to verify this!'

I have some idea what these do (I think they push more air into the exhaust area when the engine is cold or something).

Anyway, does the price he states sound about right? Could I buy them myself (second hand?) and have a local garage fit them instead & save a chunk of money?

SHOULD I BE WARY! IS THERE A CHANCE THAT THIS IS HIDING SOMETHING ELSE THAT COULD BE MORE EXPENSIVE?

Any replies would be gratefully received :-)

Many thanks,

PHK.

Get the paperwork.
"Air suction valves" is gobbledygook.

Thanks Butty :-)

I have decided that there is something that doesn't 'click' about the car, so I will give it a wide birth!

You need him to give you the error code. If a garage has stated that as the problem, they must be aware of the error code. "Air suction control solinoid valve" is error code 61 (according to my fault codes supplement supplied with the PSi3)
It's an emisions thing that allows air to increase the temp. of the exhaust gas to fire up the cat quicker when the engine is cold.

Thanks John - I've had so much messing about with people saying that there cars have FSH but don't, or don't have road tax (so you can't legally test drive it on the public highway), or the car has some other kind of fault (like this one), that I am going to steer clear of these and find a nice straight one with nothing wrong (if I am careful) :-)

All,
In the end, I bought a Bora 4motion. '03 plate with under 47,000 miles on the clock. Nice condition and lots of extras (sat nav, leather, rain sensing wipers etc.)

Not in the same 'ball park' as a Scoobie with regard to performance I know, but I needed to get a car this week and I simply couldn't find a WRX PPP that had FSH (or close to)!

Thanks for all your help and advice :-)
