boost question
hi all , had my head gaskets go on my 1996 WRX import and the side of the radiator split i am running 1.5 bar boost off of a TDO5 turbo with a front mount intercooler i have been told that the amount of boost i have been running could have contributed to the head gasket going. i have now put multi layered steel gaskets on would 1.5 bar be to much for this if so what would your recommendations be for boost. the car is currently running 320 BHP
cheers John.

Hi,
I have had 6 imprezas and never have any ran higher than 1.2. All mine were proffesionally set up. I had one which was at 1.5 Bar and that was a red top sti (Overboosting massively) so got it set down to 1.2.
What mods do you have on the engine, or has boost been increased using a boost controller.
If bottom end not uprated = caboom!! at this pressure.
Cheers Danny

Mods on car are straight through stainless steel exhaust, stainless steel headers induction kit (blitz) big front mount intercooler with balieys dump valve uprated map sensor STIyellow injecters uprated fuel pump re mapped by power engienering in uxbridge
Not 100% sure its running on 1.5 as dont have paper work from last map but when it was running at 285 before injecters and fuel pump were uprated it was running at 1.3 bar.So idont know if it was the fuel pump and injecters that gave me the extra power because my gage stops at 1 bar
Cheers John.

So is the car overboosting? If not overboosting (fuel cut) then the fuel cut set point has been increased during the map.
I would look at getting it mapped again and getting a boost gauge that reads more than 1 bar lol
If it was set at 1.3 bar it should still be the same unless someone has been tweaking under the bonnet.

Don't believe the above about running 1.5 bar boost pressure blowing head gaskets! My car was remapped by mr bob rawle a few months ago to 1.5 bar boost peak.
I'm running different mods and this is on a 99 uk turbo, but I don't think for one minute that bob rawle would map my car past it's capabilities, or push it right to the edge of it's limits.
I spoke a technician the other week who was operating the rr on a rr day, and he ran 1.8 bar of boost pressure through his 99 uk turbo without no headgasket failure....
Although I do expect that if you're car has done high millage that could be an additional factor.

If the head is flat before it is fitted then 1.5 bar will not blow the head gasket on a properly installed cylinder head. ARP studs would help keep it all together and 1.4-1.5 bar is quite normal on these cars subject to model and year.
The biggest factor is whether the heads were flat and it has been put together properly.
