Default ECU from 02 into a 51??

Without looking at both units to compare...

I've got an ECUTek on the ecu out of my old 02 plate wrx and just wanted to know if it would work in 51 plate wrx?

Not sure about the connectors, but you`d prob need the keys coded to the new ecu.

The DENSO ECU's are physically interchangable but the maps might not be.......for peace of mind I'd have the 51 plate mapped ......Opensource would be fine

Shaun - so its likely the ecu from my old 02 plate would connect up to the 51 plate?
The ecutek would def need re-mapping thats standard, but could they re-code the keys at the same time or is that another pit-stop expense?

Why change the ECU if you are going for a re-map, It's the same DENSO ECU for both cars. Is your 51 plate ECU broken ?

I looked into this once as i thought it would save paying the license but in the end didnt bother,as by the time i bought the ecu payed subaru to recode it was just as easy to get a remap on mine.If you have the keys and locks your ok if not open source the one in the car.Unless you want ecutek then a recode might be cheaper than the liscence?

Ecutek mapper can code the keys.

As it will need mapping on the new car etc just get it done then.

I dont charge to do so as part of a remap

Thanks Simon, I'll feed this info to the interested party...

He's got a modded 51 plate wrx, but std ecu (and as it has a fmic I'm concerned its running lean). So if my old ECUTek'ed ecu from my 02 wrx will plug and play then its a done deal.

As you've cleared up the key coding issue there's nothing else to worry about... so long as the 02 ecu DOES fit in the 51 car... they're both bug eyes so should do?

I'll have to take a look see I guess to be sure its the same pin set up

I'm now really confused..........you want to put your custom mapped ECU into your mates car and you want his standard ECU ??

Why not keep both ECU's in place and open source map them for each car ?

No the ecutek'd ecu is from my old 02 wrx which i smashed up and this other guy has a 51 wrx with std ecu... but he has a few mods inc a fmic which will mean its running lean.

Therefore he needs a mappable ecu which is why I wanted to know if my old ecutek'd ecu from my 02 wrx would plug and play in his car

I have to agree, why go through the whole hassle of key coding and changing ecu etc when you can get the standard ECU remapped by many reputable tuners using open source with the same results for half the cost! (Que the debate!!)

Though I can understand wanting to sell your mate this ECU to make £150 because of the licence.

I didnt realise that the std ecu was mappable using open source... (not that I'm aware of what open source is), but if I had of known that when I had my 02 wrx I wouldnt have gone with an ecutek if open source achieves the same result and is a cheaper option.

Guess I'll have to advise my mate of this and not get the £150 i was hoping to pocket

There will be people that are wanting a particular tuner to do their car, which means that tuner may only use EcuTek, so will need a licence. So get your ECU on ebay for a buy it now of £150 and get some cash in your pocket!

When I had my Bug WRX mapped back in 2002 / 3 EcuTeK was the only ECU Flash option available, and even then it was a generic (simple) map burnt onto the ECU in a car park (a so called Tek 2 map LOL) £500 quid and then locked ........ since then lots of things have changed, largely for the better.

Open source was not available back then

Who Mapped your car ....... ??

Cheers

Shaun

PS I've still got the original ECU in my Bugeye having been mapped by Bob Rawle, Andy Forrest, Pat Herbourne........and likely more mapping by Duncan.

PPS Enginemapper........welcome to the debate, I go back as far as John Banks driling out the restrictor pill on his de-catted bug STi to try and cure his boost problems

Okey dokey will eBay it

I had my car done in early 2007 down at Power Engineering... altho I think they've changed to Talk of the Devil... or was it that their tuner left them to open that place?

I cant remember the guys name...

Not being funny but why would anyone pay £150 for a ecutek ecu, when a license for the one in your own car is about £150 or have they gone up in price

All I know is that in 2007 I was charged about £600 to have the ECUTek3 licence put on and mapped.

If someone buys what I'm selling for 150, then gets it remapped for another 150-200 thats half the price of having it new.

I can see your point but a license is as cheap/dear as £125 now and thats what you would save fitting your ecu,and i doubt you can get a ecutek map for under £300 but i guess you might get lucky.

You can get an EcuTeK map adjustement for £300 but only then if the original mapper does it. If you go to a new ecutek mapper he can't "see" the other persons map and has to start again from scratch = long mapping session again = more money to pay.

£300 to start from scratch

Its going on a new car unlikely to be tweakable even with similar mods.

So basically I'm not gonna be able to sell the ECU I've got as its hardly worth anyone taking the risk on it when they can buy new for little more money?

I'll stick it on eBay for like £50 then and see what happens...

Cheers guys

The few ive seen sold went for about £75/100 which is better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick If i didn't have a license i would pay that as there's a good ecutek mapper pretty close to me.
