Default Cambelt Hydraulic Tensioner

Need to do the cambelt on my 93 import WRX. One thing I'm unsure on whether I'm likely to have to replace is the Hydraulic Tensioner. This type is only on cars up to 96.

Do you think it is just worth buying the part at the same time as the other bits, or will the current one more than likely be OK. Want to get the job done quickly so don't want to have to wait for parts, but equally don't want to spend £85 on somethiong i don't need.

Thanks very much for your help, Jonny

your current one will more than likely be ok, you will need to measure it when you take it apart to ensure it conforms to the manufacturers spec, can you not send it back if not needed to save you getting stuck with your car in pieces?

Just wondering how easy it would be to return, anyone ever retunred something to say camskill as they seem to have the best prices.
Anyone else done the job and either did or didn't replace the tensioner?

it depends how long you have had the tensioner and weather its in the original packaging or not, and there returns policy,
i did my timing belt last weekend and didn't replace the tensioner, at the end of the day its up to you.

As mentioned above - you wont know if its serviceable until you remove it and check it.
Measure the plunger rod extension ( 15.40~16.40mm ) on the tensioner and check for excessive fluid loss through the plunger seal.
